Software update

I visited Garmin's website with my 750 hooked up and My Garmin said that there was a software update. So I downloaded it and when the installation had finished I checked my version. I now have (GASP) 4.9.....hey wait a minute...that's the version I have been running. Garmin didn't say which software it was updating, I just assumed it was going to be the OS. Does anyone know exactly what the update was for? The GPS sure loads the maps and starts a LOT faster now.

You can read all about the situation here>>>

5.10 was pulled leaving 4.90 the latest available version.

Dashboard or WebUpdater?

I assume you saw updates available through myGarmin Dashboard. Updates here could be a full firmware update--or an unneeded update to Finnish or Turkish language text or traffic, etc.

Here at the POI Factory, it's recommended to look for updates using WebUpdater mostly because it'll tell you what the actual update(s) is/are but also let you select which of the many you will want to download and install.

Same here

I had this same "update" about three or four times. All of them when I was using Dashboard. WebUpdater didn't show new firmware or any other update but Dashboard did "updated" my gps. Firmware was every time at version 4.9.

So far I thing it did actually nothing to gps. Even when you restart unit after "update" it starts normally, not showing any sings of anything new installed. So I guess it may be some sort of glitch in Dashboard. But it seems to be harmless, as it is not messing up unit.

But in long run I agree with CraigW about checking with WebUpdater first to find out what kind of update it will be. After latest 5.1 firmware fiasco you can mess up unit with "blind" update.

FYI: I have always been told

FYI: I have always been told by Garmin tech support NOT to use the dashboard on the MYGARMIN website for software updates. They told me to use the WEBUPDATER program. Webupdater has fewer issues and I strongly believe that. Ask around and most Garmin loyalest will tell you the same.

You are all correct

I have always used Webupdater in the past for map and software updates and never had a problem. I was at the Garmin site checking on something else and decided to try the Dashboard as I had never used it. I was surprised when it told me that an update was ready to download. And doubly surprised when it didn't appear to update anything. I wasn't aware of glitches with Dashboard and it what you guys say is true (no reason not to believe you) then Garmin should take the feature down.

Wonder

Makes me wonder why Garmin even developed Dashboard since many of it's functions overlap those of Webupdater!?!

Just Another Spyware and Marketing Tool, IMHO

You have to create an account and register your unit to use Dashboard. They tell you they will be gathering information, even ask you to volunteer to give them permission to download data from your unit. However, there is no full disclosure of the information they will collect or with whom they will be sharing your information. And, after you register, all of the information they collect will be personally identifable. Spyware extraodinaire!

It also serves effectively as a "carnival side show barker" to get you to go to various marketing areas of their website. Effective tool!

IMHO: Too much risk and too little benefit to the end user. sad

GArmin often makes you

GArmin often makes you scratch your head. Their own processes and policies probably cost them more customers than their competitor's advertising.

They tell you something doesnlt work but they leave it available for you to use.

Ouch! another sliver.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

I have a tendency to wait a bit on the updates to see if there is a problem with them. Seems to work out for me a little better.

I tried to download the update the other night and the install never finished. It just seemed to hang. I tried three times and gave up - hoping that the Garmin would still work. it did. I don;'t know if it installed anything or not. I was using the website Dashboard to do this.
