Ipad 2 GPS capabilities

Is anyone planning to give the Ipad 2 with GPS a try? I am wondering how it compares with my Garmin. I think it would be nice for the passenger/navigator to use in 3G mode to switch back and forth between the Internet and GPS to do research on POI's along the way.

Just got an iPad 1 a few months ago

...and the 3G iPad 2s are sure pricey. So I'll stick with my trusty gps which is paid for, and a lot lighter for now. Latest and greatest doesn't appeal to me.

Wifi iPads don't have a gps receiver in them

So... that kind of limits you to either getting a 3G version - or - getting a Bluetooth GPS receiver that you can make work with an iPad - or, better: get a BadElf GPS device on Amazon.com - it's made to make a recent model iPod Touch or a wifi iPad a fully functional GPS when used with an app appropriate for the device...

I have a BadElf device - and use it with my first generation Wifi iPad and the Navigon app - works quite well and makes the iPad a very practical GPS.

The gps on my ipad1 3G works well.

Not sure how to mount it to my car. But the gps works. By the way, I no longer own a stand-alone gps. The standalone gps business is dying.

Stand-alone GPS

What makes you think the gps pnd's are dying? I think in a money making move gps manufacturers are slowly moving forward with improvements.

standalone GPS

not sure I agree I think it will be around for awhile. I can't see carrying an IPAD while in pedestrian mode on vacation

PND dying

Actually the writing is on the wall for the PND makers. The market has become fairly saturated. The replacement market is steady, but it can't fuel the boom of a couple years ago when a GPS was "the device" for gifting. Both Tom-Tom and Garmin are predicting big revenue drops as more people move toward the smartphone type of unit. The market for standalones will remain, but you won't see a lot of changes. IMO that's why the "new" Garmin units are a reshuffling of features from older units and lines.

An app on your iPad that's also on your iPhone is a great way to roll... if only Garmin would release their app as a software as a service model - map updates 4 times a year, app updates as needed - I'd pay up to $60/year for that... and have the maps on the device - don't rely on a data connection maps as you go.

Is there an app for that?

Just out of curiosity, is there a Poi-Factory app for the iPad and/or iPhone?

(Something so all these points-of-interest databases are available on these iDevices.)

The web site loads fine on the iPad/iPhone's Safari web browser - it's kind of small on the iPhone smile - as far as custom POIs go, it's all about the apps - the apps I'm familiar with/using are just not capable of using custom POI lists.

And for those curious - the apps I'm using: Navigon & TomTom - because they load full maps to the device.

And I believe there are other discussions in the 'Smartphone' section of the forum addressing other questions about POIs on Smartphones.

IPad too large

Even though my IPad does not have the GPS option on it, no 3g, I feel that it is too large to have mounted in the vehicle. Especially anywhere near the windshield. Creates too large of a blind spot. If it is mounted below the windshield then your taking your eyes off of the road to see the map. Granted if you have turn by turn capability you will not need to take your eyes off the road as much. Myself I would like to be able to mount the device into the dash itself. Granted some vehicles that would take a lot of fabrication just to make room.

As for the stand alone market going away, not so fast IMHO. I still see a lot of people purchasing them. I can see a phone the size of an I-Phone being capable of replacing a Garmin or Tom-Tom, but not something like an I-Pad or Galaxy.

they work well (3g models)

... and there is significantly less start-up time for satellite acquisition.
The Magellan app also has the stored maps feature, but the maps are dated, and the address book feature has problems reaolving addresses.

The Navigon app is universal for iPhone and iPad, and is full-featured.

You can already do this with Copilot on any laptop.

If you get that BAD divice you should be able to download Copilot onto the Ipad. After using this you will not want to use the Garmin again.
