“Understanding root causes of red light running crashes (e.g., intentional versus unintentional infractions, driving under the influence, or traffic signal or intersection defects) is necessary to advance remedies that are specific to the problem,” the report stated. “In contrast, red light camera advocates presume red light running crashes occur from willful red light running.”

The report concluded that federal standards should be established to require engineering analysis before the installation of red light cameras. It also recommends full transparency in the reporting of accident data at red light camera locations.

The Way of The World

It's pretty common these days for everything with an issue or a problem. Society is led to fix the issue or problem, not the root cause. I cut my finger, put a band-aid on... why not look at why I cut my finger and put a stop to that instead? Same with my truck, stupid fan makes a clicking noise, it's a known issue and instead of fixing the root cause (whatever it is), they've replaced the fan four times now. People don't run red lights for the fun of it. Generally they are either intoxicated, distracted with cell phones, infotainment, etc..., or because they are breaking the law for their own selfishness. I am a firm believer in the 5 Why philosophy and Layered Process Audits, etc... Society is too quick to post blame and quick fixes. There, that's my two cents... for what they're worth.

It would be nice if there was a standard way to present data. If every study has its own method, how can anyone gather meaningful information from it?

That was...

...a good article.

Thanks!

As most know, I am an advocate of Automated Traffic Enforcement with stipulations that there the yellow timings be at least as great as those recommended by the Traffic Engineers along with an "all red interval" of at leat two seconds.

I am not one that would state that "red light running crashes occur from willful red light running” because one only has to sit at a traffic light for a short time to see poeple distracted by their cellphone run the red light. If there is ATE opponent who contends that there is not "willful" running of red lights, I would like to invite them to my town to watch one of several red lights where "willful" running is a common occurance (and my experience seems that most drive trucks).

But let's think about distracted and "willful" drivers for a moment. Just how long would yellow lights have to be to prevent them from running red lights?
