Out of Space for New Update for the Garmin 650

I received the email that a new update (NT 2011.40) is available. I guess, the map has grown in size so that it will no longer fits on the Garmin 650. According to the directions it will be possible to store map data on my SD card. Currently, I am downloading directly to the Garmin 650, so I will try loading to the SD card later.

While waiting for the download here are the two references for adding map data to an SD card.

How do I load the remainder of the map update to my unit?
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={e1dac890-ed07-11df-ea12-000000000000}

How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?
https://buy.garmin.com/support/productSupport/kanaCase.faces...

When done, I hope to post an update.

Strange

The 2011.4 NA maps all fit on my 660 & I think both units have the same memory size. So far, I have not had to delete any files to make room, like unused voice files.

Map file

The map file is named gmapprom.img and will be found in the X:\Garmin folder. It will also be the largest file, around 1.3GB. Any file that ends with a .img extension is a map file and should never be moved or deleted.

EDI: Oops, where did your reply post go? wink

I don't know if this model

I don't know if this model has a SD card slot, but it likely does. You have two options:

1. Split North America between internal memory and the SD Card.

2. Install North America on the SD Card.

Option 2 is the easier of the two because you only run MapInstall once. I personally run Option 1 on my 200W because I hate wasting space, and I'd rather have that space used.

It worked!

Took A long time, but the overflow map installed on my SD card and appears to be integrated with the map actually installed on the unit's memory itself.

Next time I do it, I will be a better prepared. For example, the map info stored in the SD card does not need to duplicate the other maps on the units main memory since it gets integrated.

660 fit

I just got a new Lifetime numaps..and decided to put it on my 660 instead of the 760 because I like that screen better. and it all fit no problem. You may need to Remove some other files. Check to see if the Jpeg pictures or the audio books files are still on yours, you can easily move all that to the SD card.

About 420-440Mb free on my 660 after last weeks map upgrade

A couple years ago, when we found this site, and started using custom POI's, and started learning about how to add custom vehicles and such..... I got concerned about running out of space on my 660 with the lifetime maps download. Wife & I knew which voice files we did and did not use. We had already changed the boot up picture.., and music files already resided on SD card... So we created a directory on a HD That mimick'd the 660 directory structure, and copied un-needed voice, picture, music, vehicle files to that hard drive, then made a CD of it that we placed in the garmin manual printout (which we got off Garmin site),along with the PDF of that manual... POI Loader, Text to speech editor, extra Vehicle files, etc...

We then deleted the un-needed files off the 660.

Our thinking was that if we decided later we needed those files back, we'd have them stored on CD, and know which directory to return them to...

Last week after installing the new maps, we checked to see how much space was left.... I believe I saw in the neighborhood of 420-440Mb free...

That should hold us..... and we have the deleted files on the CD, should we ever need them....

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

It Worked Again!!

I figured out how to install the POI files on the SD card. So they are now installed on SD card itself, which leaves more memory on the Nuvi650 itself.

The adaptability of the Nuvi650 to use the SD card, as needed, is quite amazing.

The POI files is stored on the SD card:
I:\garmin\Poi\poi.gpi

(Of course the drive designator "I:" will probably be different on other computers)

I keep practically all my

I keep practically all my files on my sd card except which the unit requires to be stored on the unit itself.
