When I press Detour from the Menu, it takes me to the screen where I can detour by Roads. My question, what is the 1/2 mile, 2 miles and the 5 miles use for. I can't figure that out. When I press on them nothing happens.

Prompted detour: Select to set a prompted detour for a specific distance or a particular road on the route. With a Route active touch Detour on the menu page to see a list of detours.
So basically it is for selecting on how long a detour you want ie. do you want the GPS to detour for 1/2 mile, 2 miles or 5 miles. I am suspecting that in your case a route was not active.

A route needs to be active for the Detour option to be available.

Of ALL the units in the Garmin line, the 855 is the WORSE and most useless unit I have ever seen and used!
