Does anyone else beside me have trouble with Jill's voice sounding like she has sore throat or something?

Did you try a TTS throat lozenge?

The speakers on the newer units (or any of them for that matter) aren't the best in the world. Sometimes they can be considered as good as abysmal, but usually they're worse. Use Turbo's TTS Voice Editor to play with the rate and volume. It cures a lot of problems with the different voices - even if you don't change any phrases.

When using the editor, how do you actually hear what changes you make to the voice?

The editor changes the playback parameters. It does not change the voice and the editor is not a program that will play the voice files.
