Garmin 78S

Thinking about getting one of these for my motorcycle. Anyone that has one would you recommend getting Navigation software on SD card to save the internal memory for other things like Topo ect... or just get Navigator DVD and load it on the units memory.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I ride this motorcycle off road mostly so want a hand held unit I use a Zumo 660 for my street bike, but wouldn't dare take that off road.

78S

Hmmmmmmm.......... I can't remember but I "think" I put my maps on the microSD card. I'll try to remember to check when I go home for lunch.

===================

Ok, back from lunch. My main map file - gmapsupp.img - is on the card. It's 1.25GB (1,311,808k).

My POI files are also on the card but my geocaches are on the unit itself.

I didn't buy the files on the card - I purchased the mapset from Amazon and loaded it myself. If you buy the maps on a card you can move them to other units but you CAN'T UPDATE them if you so desire in the future. I purchased the regular mapset and can update it at will.

As a side note I'll say that I have an invisibleShield on my 78S. I use one on all of my devices and it's proven invaluable in the past. I once lost my footing and grabbed at a young oak tree to try to keep from falling. As it was, I ended up sliding all the way down the trunk. Oak bark is rough! I tore up the inside of my arm and the screen of my old 76Sx was pressed right against the bark all the way down. The screen cover was milky after that but it did the "self healing" thing overnight and was fine. There was NO damage to the screen or the invisibleShield. I've left the unit on the hood of the truck a number of times and watched the unit bounce through gravel, over parking lots, and down the road. It eventually made the functioning of the unit a bit unstable (which is why I purchased the 78S) but the screen was never damaged.

Thanks

I think I'm going to get the DVD. Thanks a lot for saving me headaches in the future. I'm going to check into the invisibleShield, never heard of it before. Now checking one last time for the best prices before I hit the buy button.
Thanks again,
Guns

Invisible Shield

I have to agree that if you want to protect your various toys then invest in the Invisible Shield. It comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Do you use the 76 invisibleshields on the 78? They don't list the 78 but I figure they must be the same (Ordered my 78 last night).

Yep

Yes, I use the same shield on the 78S as I did on the 76CSx. The screen is the same size and it fits fine.
