St Petersburg Florida red light cameras

I have just started noticing the red light cameras in the St. Petersburg Fl area. I'm familiar with the cameras in the Phoenix area, that being multiple cameras to provide both front and back pictures for all four approaches to the intersection. The monitored intersections I have seen in the St. Pete area are less obvious as there is only one camera, monitoring traffic flow in one direction and set back from the intersection to record the rear tag (Florida does not require a front license plate).

May be turn lane cameras

What you are seeing may be turn lane cameras - cameras that detect whether there are any vehicles in that lane. These cameras are usually very small cylinders.

St. Pete is scheduled to get red-light cameras but I think the city is still negotiating.

This may help ID cameras

Miss POI

I wrote about this a week or so ago there was an article in the St.Petersburg Times that said they may use some of the camera locations now in use if they do this the cameras will be installed in 30 to 60 day's if they go with another system it might take 6 months or more. The files that were added yesterday are for Pasadena Fl,which is a city west of St.Petersburg but in the same county.

saw the flash first, then the camera

I wouldn't have noticed the camera at all except it was at night and I saw that dreaded strobe flash aimed at a car in front of mine. I had to go back to find the camera. That's what I thought was noteworthy. There's only one camera and it's not at the intersection. Not as obvious as those in the Phoenix area.

I was refering to the general area when I said St. Pete. There was one camera in Gulfport/South Pasedena (perhaps bordering the two) and two in South Pasedena. Sorry if that was confusing.
