As A Citizen

of Monkey County, Thank you.

I also just read an article today in the Washington Post that they will be deploying an additional class of camera over and above Relight & Speed cameras. It will be posted in District of Columbia pedestrian crossing zones to catch autos NOT giving right of way to pedestrians. I'm sure they'll lose money on that too.

The laws simply have to be written that funds collected for such infractions CANNOT go into general revenues, but used ONLY for road repair. We'll see how interested they are in safety, after all.

I also saw that on the local TV news. Chief Cathy was uncontrollably excited that they could also use them to ticket those 'blocking the box' without tying up traffic even more, by writing the tickets via mail vs. in person.

new cameras in MoCo

They must've changed the website - it used to differentiate between the fixed and mobile cameras. I noticed that most of the new locations added to the Speed Camera file are mobile, not fixed.

Semi-Fixed (?)

I think in the last 'round' of additions there were only one or two new 'fixed' (permanent) cameras.

But, there was a bunch of 'semi-fixed' cams added. Have a look at the news release link in the main post and there is a video of the new boxes. They chain them to poles & such, leave them in place for weeks and then switch locations. surprised

Thanks for pointing that out

Thanks - I'll have to look more closely the next time I receive an alert on my GPSr but don't see the fixed camera pole I'm used to seeing.

Luckily, none of the new cameras are on my usual commuting routes between Germantown and Bethesda, although I guess I have to make sure my camera file is current!

Thanks.

Thanks.

Cameras sprouting up all over Maryland

Speed cameras are being approved big time here on the Eastern Shore. Centreville apparently already has them. Trappe has approved them, and Cambridge is considering them. They're all the mobile type set up within 1/2 mile of schools, as has been approved by the state.

Maybe POIs should somehow be able to account for mobile cameras by designating a 1/2 mile circle around schools in cities that have those cameras.

In our area near DC, the schools have speed cameras which seem to be relocated depending upon season. In the warm weather, when kids are likely to be outside, the speed camera is there close to the school. In winter, they disappear to another location.

MD's deficit is so large that speed cameras won't do much to balance the budget. All kinds of new or increased fees will be showing up shortly, including additions to utility bills to help balance the budget. Time to abandon MD!

Perhaps Nepal, Tibet or South America.

Choices for those who desire to be free of the nanny state

Unfortunately for us, there is no land left unclaimed on this planet since every island, every forest, every desert and every coast is claimed. With each piece of land comes an established government. Other planets are not yet readily accessible.

If we want to find a government-free area or a land of economically-informed government leaders, it may be that the only choices left are to re-establish limited government in this american republic or move to the high seas. While I haven't done a point-by-point check in a long time, the last time I did yes, the published locations were included in the poi file here on this site.
