1490LMT traffic icon

I'm a new Garmin 1490LMT owner. My traffic icon tends to show up intermittently. Per Garmin support's suggestion I have used the web updater to download the most recent firmware and have double checked the cord position and connection. Immediately after doing all that, I get the icon fairly regularly for a couple days then it's back to intermittent. I should also mention that I'm in the Chicago area which has excellent coverage based upon the map Garmin displays.

Does anyone else have this issue? If so, are there any solutions you can recommend? Any and all ideas welcome.

Garmin 1490 LMT Milwaukee

Hi:

I never had a traffic locate system this is a new unit for me and I get red yellow and green lines and out of
the blue a traffic alert will blurb out. So I take it with a grain of salt in Milwaukee. Still field testing
the unit. Also I put a screen protector on mine and
bought a protective case from best buy. I love the
5 inch screen.

There is a way to rebuild the traffic provider database

but I can't find it now.

It is something like you go into the trip computer screen that shows the compass and do a long press on the middle of the circle that is on the screen.
That will bring up a diagnostic screen, and one of the options lets you tell it to rebuild or refresh the traffic provider database.

Testing mine, too! And I did

Testing mine, too! And I did the same with regard to the screen protector and case. For what it's worth, I've been using the Zagg Invisible Shield protectors for some time (on my watch, camera, cellphone and former Quest GPS)...there is no better protector made and they come with a lifetime warranty!

Thank you for the diagnostic

Thank you for the diagnostic info...I'm gonna check that out!!

I'm a fairly new 1940LMT

I'm a fairly new 1940LMT owner too. I have not noticed the issue you point out. It would seem that the traffic icon pretty much pops up whenever I have a route charted out. I assume the traffic icon would only pop up when you have a route charted. Do you have a route charted or do you only have the map turned on to see where you are in Chicago?

Could it be hardware??

I have seen the traffic icon comes and goes and comes back again only when I drive from one traffic coverage area to another via rural highways.

What I suspect is that you may have a loose connection between your GPS and the traffic receiver. I always feel that mini USB connector is a bit too small for the fairly heavy traffic receiver.

traffic icon

I don't think it relates to a route. I readjusted the power/antenna cable up on the dash and now it comes on whenever it powers up. Been doing that consistently for a few days now so I'm hoping that fixed the issue.

I was told to make sure you

I was told to make sure you have your cable loose and not bunched up. When I did that, it helped a bit but I still get intermittent traffic reception.

I hang the cord on the rear view mirror

I'm in the the Chicago area too, and my 1490T picks up the traffic signal pretty well in the city and most of the suburbs. The icon isn't on all the time, but I don't let that bother me. When I really want a good signal, I hang the cord on the rear-view mirror. I do this especially when I'm driving into the city from out of town and I want ample warning of possible backups.

If there's someone else in the car with me, I have them use Google Maps on their phone for more up to date traffic information.

I'm in Tampa and rarely see it come up.

I think the only time I've seen it is when I take a long trip. Maybe Tampa has no traffic data.

This worked for me:
