Never Burn a POILoader Bridge

Another thread has detailed some problems with POILoader 2.6.0 NOT being able to load POI files which POILoader 2.5.4 accepted.

I want to suggest a strategy for downloading Garmin software that might reduce the stress that seems apparent in many of the users of the new version.

Whenever you download a new version of software, make sure that the previous download remains on your computer. Myself, I have a folder called MyDwnLds with sub-folders for each piece of software I download. Most software has the version number in the title of whatever is downloaded. If it does not, then you should make sure that you add
such a version number to the file which you save.

In the case of the POILoader, the MyDwnLds/Garmin/POILoader folder has a file called POILoaderforWindows_254.exe and a file called POILoaderforWindows_260.exe.

I am going to wait until there seems to be no problems with 2.6.0 before installing it, but had i done so, I would still have the 2.5.4 version to reinstall.

I realize that some space is wasted (12,214KB in the case of 2.5.4 and 16,976KB for 2.6.0). However, one often finds that a new release does not work and it is nice to have the prior version available.

Good suggestion. I do that

Good suggestion. I do that for all my software with a subdirectory named, would you believe, "Software." Within that directory, various Programs are identified with their latest update. I always keep at least one old version of known quality after updating.

Thanks WAASup !

An alternative for the geeks

An alternative for the geeks among us ..
If you have a nice compressed file program that will open .exe/zip and .cab files (like 7-Zip) then you can extract just the new v2.6.0 exe file and run both versions.

The only file that appears to have changed (going by time stamp/size) from v2.5.4 is the exe file. The help file, etc. is the same.

I made a new sub-folder in the Garmin folder called v260, opened the POILoaderforWindows_260.exe file with 7-Zip then opened the Disk1.cab file inside of it (again with 7-Zip) and extracted 'POILoader.B4FE3D7E_054B_47B5_9B01_F7DA3FA1488D' into the new folder and changed the name to 'POILoaderv260.exe', created a shortcut to it and added it to my Start Menu.

Only one at a time will run, but you can see which version you have open by right-clicking on the top window bar and selecting 'About POI Loader'.

Note- download and save the installer exe(really a zip) directly from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=927 and save it someplace to open it with 7-Zip.

What worked for me

I had 2.5.4 installed and the 2.6.0 uninstalled the previous version even though 2.5.4 is in C:/Garmin/POI Loader and 2.6.0 is in C:/Program Files/Garmin/POI Loader.
I installed 2.6.0 and then installed 2.5.4 and they both run.

Works the other way as well

Extracting just the exe should work the other way as well. If you have 260 installed then the 254 exe is in the Disk1.cab file (of POILoaderforWindows_254.exe) as 'POILoader.B4FE3D7E_054B_47B5_9B01_F7DA3FA1488D' and you can rename it to POILoaderv254.exe or something.

extracted 'POILoader.B4FE3D7E_054B_47B5_9B01_F7DA3FA1488D'

I'm really impressed with this- How did you figure out the real exe file?

:-)

Garmins Answer To POI Loader 2.6.0

I wrote Garmin the other day about the problem with their newest POI Loader their answer to my email.I wrote After downloading the newest POI Loader I had trouble with some POI files saying different lines were corrupt, when I went back to a previous version 2.5.4 and reloaded the poi's the reloaded poi's worked fine.
Their Reaponse:
Dear Michael
Thank you for contacting Garmin International
I am sorry for the troubles.Since the POI files are produced by individuals and there is really no standard set in place you might have different results from different providers. At this point you could download the latest version of the poi files from the provider or continue with the fix you have discovered.Since POI's are so new to the general public there is bound to be issues like this popping up from time to time. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
