Splash Screen

A few days ago i read on here how to do the splash screen, went through the steps and everything worked great for a day. I was up loading some new poi,s with the updated poi loader yesterday and now for some reason i have no splash screen. I dont even get the original garmin one to come up, i just have a black screen till the warning message comes on.

SO, does anyone have any idea what i did? Did i somehow delete something i shouldnt have? I have reset the unit and that didnt work. I have looked back through the posting and could not find anything that works. Any help would be much appreciated!

Care to try this ?

I assume you chose a nice pic, adn loaded it somewhere in your Pics folder. Just navigate there with your GPS menu, select teh file, and "set this as splash screen".

There may be variations depending on the model you have (I'm not totally familiar with the 255W, I entrust my life to a 205T myself), but that's the general idea. Yes, VERY simple grin

Keep us posted !

Splash Screen 255w

It appears SPERA scans the post's actual message. KNUCME did not ask how to replace or put up a splash screen. The message asks why did his splash screen he added and the default dissapear after the splash process was completed. I too have had several 255w units do this and have never had anyone be able to explain a fix. Both of us would like this assistance.

Splash Screen 770

I've tried to use a particular pic for a splash screen, resized properly and set as splash screen. It won't show.

Then I tried the Nuvi Tips and Tricks anti theft screen. It wouldn't show either.
So it might be a problem on more than a 255w

Allow me to respond :-)

I know what he was asking, but as first Response I just wanted to confirm if "that" was what he'd done to add his splash screen.

Based on that answer, me and many others would have been in a better position to help him troubleshoot the idea.

Instead, I guess I was the one getting shot at.

But don't you worry none, ya missed me grin

Now, back to the situation at hand. Would you please respond and confirm / infirm my post, so we can all get this issue solved ? Atta Team grin

My 255W also has the splash screen problem

My 255W also has the “no splash screen” problem.

Spera, I have done all the steps required to "set this as splash screen".

In the 255W the steps are Tools, Picture Viewer, tap “splash picture”, tap “Info”, tap a check mark into the box beside “Display at power on?”

I used regular jpg pictures and also tried a splash picture I made using this splash screen generator: http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/splash_screen.php

I have tried placing the picture at the root of the garmin drive and also tried placing the picture in \garmin\JPG\

How I added my Pic

I picked a splash pic that was created by someone else and changed it a little to suit my needs. I then put it in the garmin/jpeg folder. I went in and selected that pic and clicked the check mark to have it display at start up. It worked fine for a day and now i get nothing. At start up i believe there use to be the word "Garmin" that displayed too but that doesnt even show. I have tried to select other pics but none of them work. They are all within the size parameters required.

What software version

are you using for those that are encountering this problem? I'm running 6.40 and have been using my various splash screens for well over a year without any glitches. Seeing that this is occuring with many different users I would guess it's a software bug and suggest that you advise Garmin.

Software Version

I have version 7.10. I just did a update last night thinking that it might help. But didnt make any difference

software version

I have 7.10 on my 255W

Update

I emailed garmin a few days after i put this message up here. I got a response today. They say " sounds like you are having software problems with your GPS" - need to send it back for service. They wanted to know how long i have had this unit - about 2 months - so i am just waiting to hear back from them about sending it in.

I guess i am not sure if i want to send it in to garmin or not. Its not that big of problem but then if it is a software problem, what else is this going to affect. Has anyone else sent their unit in for service? How long does it take?

My Splash Screen

Is the farm, barn, windmill from POI Factory.I just copied and pasted it to my GPS pic file.
Never had to resize it or anything !
Worked on my C340, Nuvi 260 and my 1490.

Still nothing here...

Just a thought, did you try and reset it to the default splash ? What happened then ? I'm trying to see if maybe it's a file size worry, have heard of a few such issues on other forums.

I'll post again if I find something more positive, of course.

picture size

....

I do not think that it is a size problem on my 255W because the same pictures that do not work on my 255w work ok on my 285W.

The splash screen generator I mentioned in my post above created a picture that is file size 175 kb, 480 x 272 pixels, 96 dpi, and 24 bit depth for the "Garmin Nuvi Wide".

However, my 285W apparently automatically resizes larger (pixel and byte) pictures that I have tried.

OK, let's keep on searching, people....

We tried

Its definitely a software processor issue and a bug Garmin will have to handle. All tests against the issue have resulted in the same response in the Garmin. No Splash either default or custom. I have over a hundred+ 255W and 265W units in the field and only three are having this problem. Impossible to recreate the problem as we have tried and tried against working units and cannot get the response of the black screen with only the text data either below or above the logos. Ours are just going back for refurbishing. It is what it is. . .

Its Back to the Factory

Just wanted to thank everyone who tried to help me with the splash screen problem. I had another problem with duplicate POI,s on that same unit that i couldnt delete so it got mailed back to Garmin this morn. Hopefully in two weeks i will have one that wont have problems. Wondering if i will get the same unit back or get a different one.

There is a way but too tech for most users

Way too late to help the OP but for others I did find a way to restore the splash screens on my 255W.

It involves getting these tools from TurboCCC’s site: RGN_Tool, GIR_Editor,

this firmware update software from Garmin site: Updater.exe
(I got mine via the firmware update for my Venture HC),

extracting the Chinese logo file, logo.bin from the GUPDATE.GCD file obtained via this Garmin firmware update :
http://www.garmin.com.cn/products/ontheroad/nuvi255W/#update... (I used 7-Zip to do the extraction )

and this Garmin firmware update file from your Garmin GPSr: GUPDATE.GCD

Basically the steps are as follows.

Use Gir_Editor to replace the Chinese logos in the logo.bin file with english Garmin Nuvi logos (or logos made by yourself).

Use RGN_Tool to combine the new logo.bin file and the GUPDATE.GCD from your Garmin GPSr into a firmware update file such as: 255W_fwversion740withlogo.rgn

Put the 255W into “preboot mode” and use the .rgn file and updater.exe to re-write the firmware on the 255W.

None of this is illegal, but it takes some study as to the details of using the tools and how to get the Garmin into “preboot” mode.

Obviously not a procedure for the faint hearted or those that gets headaches over instructions longer than two lines.

For those, the only fix would be to send their unit to Garmin, where they would do essentially the same thing except they would have a English Garmin logo.bin file to start with.

For those who worry about “bricking” your Nuvi, it is my opinion that one cannot irreversibly brick a Nuvi by using any type of software or Windows formatting tools.

For example while trying to fix the logos on my 255W I have done the following to it over a period of time:
(First I did a complete backup of all folders and files on my 255W including hidden and system types.)

Hoping that the device BIOS would recreate the logos, I deleted everything and re-formatted it to FAT, FAT32 and NTFS.
(It was originally FAT32 and that is what I went back to when NTFS did not work.)

After putting my Garmin files back on, the two logos still did not show up so I figured they must have originally been stored in the Master Boot Record (MBR). (I also had searched the entire "drive" for hidden sections or partitions using disk editor software.)

So I attempted to copy an MBR from another 255W using a free tool, MBRWizard. Somehow I managed to put an empty MBR on my 255W instead, and it would not boot into normal mode or USB mode. It would show “Loading maps” for a short time and then shutdown.

I was able to get it going again by putting it in preboot mode and running a firmware update similar to the above procedure.

But of course “your mileage may vary” so if you wish to try any of this, you do so at your own risk.

Wow - we sure are a great family here !

See how long poeple pay attention to requests ? And we all owe that to our hosts.

Miss POI for GPS President ! And some excellent thoughts for Jon as well, of course smile

Query

When such issues arise, is there a reset allowing the unit to return to factory defaults?

Factory reset

There is a so called “Factory Reset” aka “Master Reset” that causes all user data including Favorites and various settings to be erased, but it does not fix the missing splash screen problem.
