Moving to new Computer - What to do?

After 5 years of faithful service my note book is giving up the ghost. I will be moving to a new computer soon but have a lot of work ahead of me transferring programs and files.

What do I need to do for my Garmin 750? Any advice?

New downloads

Just download Webupdater from the Garmin site. Then update the 750 to have the latest & greatest stuff. After the update, make a complete backup of the device on your new computer. Then you can start with creating custom POI folder and then making sub-folders for your favorite custom POIs and then proceed to download POILoader from Garmin and transfer the custom POIs to your 750.

What to do?

Just tranfer the poi files to your new computer, download the poi installer from garmin and your gps
will never know the difference. You might want to make a copy of the files on your 750 on your new computer too.

Other thoughts

If you do not have a USB external drive, you might consider getting one and making a backup of all of your data. Then, when you get the new computer, transfer the data - like your POI files.

You can easily download all of the necessary programs from Garmin again but here is a thought for the next time. Whenever I download a program, I put in its own folder beneath a higher level folder called MyDwnLds. Whenever a new version is out, I replace the old version in,say, POILoader with the new version ad reinstall. This way, I have all of the programs ready to be used on a new (or another) comnputer.

if yours is like mine...

You will be doing a lot more than you probably expect. Don't worry about the GPS files until you get all your personal files transferred to the new operating system. If you buy the new computer at a brick and mortar store, they should have a tech department that can do the transfer and setup for you.

Some of the best advice has already been offered, and I will echo doing a backup of the old computer using an external hard drive using copy to transfer the data from your document and storage folders to the hard drive, and then once the new computer is operating copying the data files onto the new. Flash drives will work, they are cheap but won't help you establish a good backup program for your personal data.

The problem with using a backup program will be different file and folder structures and locations. That's the reason for using the copy command.

Download POI Loader

Download and install Garmin POI Loader at -

You can also

You can also use a transfer cable to copy the files and folder structure from your old PC to the new one.

These things are $20 from Amazon and, at least in my case, work fine. See:

I haven't done a transfer for a while now but one thing you should look into is if you use Mapsource, how do you get it on your new PC with a map set that is available to the software.

Transfer cable

The Belkin transfer cable works great.
When you set it up you can transfer a lot of files in one shot.
