Help with Traffic reception....

I have a 1490T that has problems receiving traffic data even though I am in the heart of Navteqs strongest signal. I can not for the life of me get a traffic icon-green circular- to appear within a 5 mile radius of my work. I have tried every option-firmware, master reset, etc. Garmin was no help. I have taken screen captures of the diagnostic sections that hopefully will shed some light.

The first two are when I am receiving traffic info.

These are when I have no icon on the map-no traffic info.

Any help would be appreciated.

Antenna

Where do you have your antenna mounted?

What is the make and model of the vehicle you are using this in?

Any modifications to the vehicle?

Signal Level

On the screen shown at http://home.pacbell.net/cclary1/Traf1.bmp you have a low signal level (18) and your error count is pretty high (71). You want to get that signal level up into at least the mid-20's for good reception. A few errors are okay and they are only a running tally for the last minute or so but it is very high which, in combination of the low signal, explains the sync loss.

For http://home.pacbell.net/cclary1/Traf3.bmp, the FM table is being searched but I gather it is having trouble finding a usable signal. You want to stretch out the GTM power cord completely and perhaps drape it over your mirror in order to get a signal. It is your antenna. Try watching the first screen, as shown in http://home.pacbell.net/cclary1/Traf1.bmp while moving the cable around. Watch the signal level. Unless you are in the deep fringes, you should be able to get that number up and get steady reception.

unless

Unless that antenna is behind a metallic heated windscreen, or a car with metal based tinted windows, or it is in an area of high electromagnetic fields, ala. laying near large bundles of wires in a dash pad.

I find that if I drape the cable over the rearview mirror reception improves 100%.

Funny, I gave basically the exact recommendations as Aardvark (above) did in the other forum (GPSReview). I am SergZak over there. 8)

update

Also make sure you've loaded the FM traffic update from Garmin's website. You have to turn the GPS off and back on for it to finish updating.
