If I get numaps LifeTime will I be able to load it to 2 units or are they just for 1 unit how does that work question

One map update per

One map update per unit.

Each update will have a key which is paired with the GPS the map is loaded on.

Why would you be mad at this? You purchase a product (the map update) that goes with a single GPS unit. If you want it to go with more than one unit, you have to purchase the same number. I don't understand why people get upset about this.

Personal Expectations?

I hope/believe rlujr7 was being facetious.

It is understandable that people want a "deal" and would LOVE if everything worked out in their favour or benefit. The same argument is used for lifetime updates (whose "lifetime"?) and traffic tickets (I was ONLY going 5 mph over the speed limit!).

It WOULD be nice, but life doesn't always work that way.

Unfortunately

It would be nice, wouldn't it? Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

One per unit.

One per unit.

It would be nice if Garmin offers "family pack", a lifetime map update which is good for up to 3 devices and adjusts the price accordingly ($120 to $150 sounds about right).

Lifetime maps

As others have said, the lifetime maps are tied to one unit. To me it's understandable that one LT purchase = one GPS unit, unless of course they choose to market a group pack in the future, as is common practice on PC software (e.g. anti-virus). My hangup with NuMaps lifetime is (to my knowledge anyway) you can't transfer the LT map update to another unit. So if you buy a new model to take advantage of new features, you're stuck buying the LT maps again (unless the new model you buy comes with it), and you're likely not to be using your old model any more.

By the way, how does this work with TomTom and Magellan lifetime maps? Do they let you transfer LT maps from one unit to another?

Lifetime Map Limitations

Add to that the lifetime map updates ARE NOT transferable with the unit. If you decide to sell the unit, the maps do not get transferred to the new owner. That is also appalling. If the map update is married to the device, it should transfer ownership with the device.

I Agree..!

Now that makes sense. Good thought.

If you wrote a song that touched the world and everyone wanted a copy of it, would you let the people copy it and pass it on, or would you feel that it would be the American way to charge everyone for their own professionaly licenced copy????

Intelectual Property

I understand that it is important for us all to obey the rules of the government. But something just seems obscene to describe an idea, or intellect as property to be owned. We are blessed that Moses or Newton didn't copywrite their ideas.

Intelectual Property

cool Hey..if you had made a better mouse trap you would want to be paid for your idea and product...while its true you could use the same trap to catch more mice...the new traps only allow you to catch one mouse per purchase..who knows..maybe you will have to have a license to use the new traps...who knew??

It takes a LOT of resources (staff time, computer hardware, computer software, vehicles, other specialized equipment, etc) to create, update and maintain this "intellectual property".

We are not paying for the idea of the maps, but rather are paying for the cost involved with performing the work and producing the product.

Well, now you have your answer...

and it's 1.

Google

Google manages to give away the maps .. for free and makes lots of money doing it .. We pay for the software once .. seems a rip-off to keep charging for it over and over again.

Map on a chip.

Maybe I read it wrong (I'll probably go back to check), but I thought I saw a map update being sold on a SD chip at Target.

That made a bit of sense, because that way you could put it into another device. It would only be in one device at a time.

Of course, they'd have to use some kind of file protection to prevent copying.

Advertising

I guess Garmin could give the maps away for free like Google if they start running commercials on the NAV as you're driving.....

--
Streetpilot C340 Nuvi 2595 LMT

Actually,

I do get commercials on my Garmin with the traffic thingie. I know ... I know its traffic service that posts the ads. All the same Garmin is competing with Google, and Google is increasing market share. Garmin's future doesn't seem so sure.

Ads

I guess I am quite behind the times, I have a StreetPilot without the traffic service, so I didn't know about that. I'll take a guess here, as you drive near a McDonalds, do you see Big Mac ads?

--
Streetpilot C340 Nuvi 2595 LMT

I haven't had mine for long

I haven't had mine for long but the ads are sort of random .. for either Olive Garden or Lobster Hut
