It won't work and you'd very
It won't work and you'd very likely brick your unit. GPSPassion.com has some discussion on it's forums regarding alternate firmware, but it's not recommended for the faint of heart as many units have been bricked in various attempts to change the firmware.

It means you killed it. It is useless. It can only be used as a brick or paper weight. The only way to make it a useful GPS again is to send it to Garmin.

Another term meaning making the unit as functional as a brick for navigation. In other words - break it and turn it into a device that will function best as an expensive paper weight.

.
"Brick" means to render the unit inoperative and useless...like a brick used to build a wall.

Are you saying a brick's useless ?
"Brick" means to render the unit inoperative and useless...like a brick used to build a wall.
And then you confirm you can use it to build a wall...
OK, OK, just ranting a bit - do forgive the intrusion

Clarification

I think I need to clarify my response a little bit, and not because some people don't know the meaning of "brick".
I posted at 5:40am so I didn't really think the whole thing through. The OP mentioned copying all the files from the friend's 465T. This means the GUPDATE.GCD file as well. My thought is that the existing firmware would attempt to load the foreign GCD file and thoroughly trash the unit.
If however the GCD file is missing from the copied firmware, nothing would happen except custom POIs from the friend's 465T would get loaded. On most Nuvi units the firmware is copied to a hidden partition of the internal memory. I could very easily be mistaken, but I'm fairly sure the firmware is hard-coded to only run from that hidden partition. I am very sure that the firmware is coded to ignore all files coming in from the SD card, with the exception of GPI files, GCD files, and GMAPSUPP.IMG.
The only way a SD card loaded with Garmin software would work on a foreign device is in the following instance:
A GPS receiver running Windows CE 5 or later, possibly hacked to allow adding programs to it, and Garmin Mobile XT.
Speaking of which, if anyone wants to send me one of those inexpensive GPSrs running Windows CE 5 gratis, I won't mind. I heard that while they're not the greatest in the world, with the right firmware (i.e. Garmin Mobile XT) they're pretty darn good.

I worked for over ten years in an archeological center in Belgium, we were building houses from 5.000 BC to 150 AD. So I learned the transition from Torchis to bricks
Oh - Torchis is a mix of clay, water and straw, which you plaster on lattice. Hopefully I taught you a little thingie there as well

Would this 3,000 year old recipe suffice? http://www.dui.com/dui-library/dui-shorts/tuts-brew
You'll never guess how right you are !
A couple miles away from that "village", is a brewery. The Brewer's husband is a historian, and came across a recipe of a beer from around 50BC. He offered the recipe to the archaeologist, and the brewer agreed to brew it for them. There's like 300 herbs in it, and it's a fantastic success every weekend or during their annual festivals !
Me ? I just drink it, nowadays. Way too old to play the Gaule - and I hate soccer with a passion, too ! I also live WAY TOO FAR from that place now

You should NEVER do anything as Root. Ah, the things you learn when you use Linux... Reminds me of the good old days when I was doing Unix stuff. Back in Neanderthals years or sumthin'...
And for those that speaka da language de la francese... A l'Age de la Bière, les Hommes vivaient dans des Tavernes.

You must be some tremendous contractor and an especially long-lived one. To be building for over 5000 years. What's your secret?
By the way the Midas Touch Golden Elixir brew from Dogfish Head Brewery is supposedly made from a recipe derived from the ingredients found in a clay jar found in the supposed Tomb of King Midas from the 8th Century BC. Its very good!
Thanks for appreciating my old age...
Here's a hint to prove the existence of the place I was talking about:
http://www.archeosite.be/index.php?view=en
Of course you all know you should NEVER trust all the stuff you see on the Web - but that one's worth a moment to visit. Try a Sunday of course, when the local Pub is open, and you'll maybe thank me for the idea
And beware of Midas' Touch and all that, I never could understand how that King would be going to the bathroom... Or was it a hoax ?

The answer is...
sudo.
I swear I should put a bumper sticker on my car that says "My smartphone runs Linux" or something stupid like that.
