Unlocking maps

I lost my eTrex Vista C, left it on the truck lid after a bike ride actually.
I bought a new one.
Went to download maps and they are locked?
Can I unlock them to download to the new E-trek?

You "went to download the maps" from WHERE?

And what exact maps and map version?

MapSource

I download my maps and waypoints from MapSource.
I have City Select North America V7
Topo US 2008
US Topo 24K National Parks West v2

Garmin maps are locked to a single unit.

Maps

Topo US 2008 should be unlocked, you can load that on multiple GPS units. I thought the National Parks 24K was unlocked too, but someone else will have to verify that.

As far as City Select NA V7, I would call or email Garmin support. Let them know your GPS was stolen, it doesn't hurt to ask.

If nothing else, perhaps you can get a discount on an upgrade.

Good luck,
Larry

So how do I unlock it from

So how do I unlock it from one unit and reload it to other unit?

You can't legally.

Yeah, for City Select, you would need to purchase another unlock code from Garmin in order to unlock the maps to another GPS unit.

Unlock codes are consumable items and cannot be reused.

You should be able to load the Topo maps, however.

You might also check out these free maps.

I may have to return the GPS then.

Mapsource will send the Topo 2008 to any GPS... Install it to your new one the same way you installed it to the original GPS.

You may get another free from Garmin

At one time, I thought you could buy certain Garmin maps and they would give you two unlock codes.

If you have older maps you may qualify for two unlock codes. Until recently it was Garmin's policy to provide unlock codes for two Garmin GPS devices with any map product. About a year ago they changed their policy so that you only get one unlock code and you must pay for any additional unlock codes. If you have older maps and buy a new Garmin device, try the MapSource Unlock Wizard and see if you can get an unlock code for the new device at no charge.

Unlocking maps

try contacting Garmin support to see if anything can be done. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks

I am calling in the morning.

Topo maps

The Topo maps are unlocked.

They were not transfering properly, because I was trying to transfer locked maps at the same time.

If I transfer just the Topos, the transfer fine

Okay so far

Well I called, no problem they can cancel the unlock code to the one unit and transfer it to the new.
I explained how my old unit was damaged.

However they could not find my unlock code in the data base.
After 2 hours on the phone, they will have to get back to me via E-mail.

Since my old unit was destroyed they seem to be fine with transferring the code.

Garmin stepped up to the plate

All is well; Garmin stepped up to the plate and did the right thing.
They can see I own several maps sp they know I am not a pirate.
Once I told them the other unit was damaged they were happy to give me a new unlock code.
Thank you Garmin
And thank you for the help from all of you.
