crazy custom POIs

In case this helps anyone having the same problem-

I was having trouble getting all my custom POIs to show up on my garmin, even though I verified the poi.gpi file was updated on the garmin.

In other words, I used the poi loader to load multiple poi files from the same directory, and it worked to create all the POIs into the poi.gpi file, because I opened the file with a text editor and saw the names of the new POIs in there, intermingled with all the weird binary characters.

But when I unplugged the garmin and then clicked on Where to->Extras->Custom POIs, it didn't have the new POIs listed there.

I thought this was pretty weird since the poi.gpi file looked like it got updated ok. So I figured the garmin must be reading from a cached version of the poi.gpi file- but I did a search and couldn't find any other gpi files on the device anywhere.

Since I couldn't find a cached version anywhere myself, I thought I should reset the device to see if that would force it to update itself. The only way I could figure out to do that was to remove the battery and then put it back. I did that- and that worked. Now all the custom POIs show up.

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know any other way I could force the Garmin to refresh it's custom poi cache, other than taking the battery out? I don't want to have to do that everytime- which wipes out all my settings.

oh yea

Looks like it works better

Looks like it works better to load one poi file at a time and to rename the gpi file each time before loading the next one. When I do that, then the new POIs show up ok without my having to reset the device.

A lot of 855 owners have reported this problem. The fix is after you load the pois to your Garmin you will need to remove the battery or hold the off switch in the off position for 10 seconds to clear the memory before your new pois will take effect.
