Garmin 3790t Voice Command Question

I have had my new 3790t for a week and have a question: In Voice Command Mode how do I get results (like a Starbucks or Cracker Barrel) that are on (or close proximity to) my current route? Right now it gives me all options and I speak one, but I do not know if the one selected is on my route. I can do it manually, just really want to use Voice Command and not push buttons while driving. It's the reason I purchased the 3790t. Thanks in advance.

Nuvi 855 commands

On my Nuvi 855, I just say "Find nearest Starbucks" and it shows me the nearest Starbucks.

Examples of Nuvi 855 commands can be found at:
Gary Hayman's Webpage - http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/page7x5.02.htm#...

Scroll towards the bottom of the page.

I am not sure whether the voice commands are similar for the 3790T .. you can experiment and let us know grin

The Voice

The voice commands on the 3790 are only a subset of what you can use on the 8x5 model.

On the 3790 you can use the commands:

Find by Name

Starbucks

Yes or 1

You will then get a list of Starbuck locations showing the distance and direction they are from your current location. Pick the line number of the one you want to go to.

Finally say Yes or Navigate to have the Nuvi calculate the route for you.

If you have a route already calculated then follow the same steps as above and the Nuvi will ask if you want to start a new route to Starbucks or add the Starbucks location to your current route.

Say - Add to current route

and the Nuvi will add the Starbucks location as a via point to your existing route.

In case you haven't downloaded the full 80-page manual yet, go here

and read pp 19-21 for a lot more info than probably came with the Quick Start manual that came with your GPS.

I just love my VR on my GPS 855. Even my wife give it commands.

Nearest not always best choice

One trouble with "find nearest" is that it could be behind you or not near any exit if you are on a limited access highway. Ideally, when traveling on a limited access highway is to find a POI that is near an upcoming exit. If you have a route plotted you can select "near my current route" with touch controls but I don't see a way to do that with voice.

Thank you to all

I think the consensus is that the new Garmin 3790t will not allow the Voice Command function to specify Near route. I bought this unit for the Voice Command feature as I travel regularly. I thought of the 800 series with their remote button Voice commands, but waited for this new unit so that I could carry less. It seems to be a great unit--big improvement over my 350 (now running on life support). The first thing I did was download the on-line manual. About as worthless as my near dead nuvi 350!! I look forward to playing with it and learning all it can do. Thanks for your answers, non-answers, and two cents worth of comments. It is all appreciated.

My GPS 855 gives me near at my command. I love it.

I didn't want to travel with

I didn't want to travel with the remote button--one more thing for me to loose. But I have heard really nice things about the 855.
I am enjoying the 3790t. I am amazed at all the comments from folks who won't take the time to learn their units and complain because their new nuvi doesn't work exactly the same way as the old one. Having really rotten manuals hurts Garmin, and I realize not all people are comfortable sitting for hours playing with (I mean learning about) their new nuvi.

3790T Comments

First, I love my 3790!!

But I too would like to see a "Find along route" command (Voice Command or otherwise) but the bigger problem I have is that when I search for a place (by name), it usually doesn't find it if it is more than a few miles away (say >10 miles). On my old StreetPilot, I could see it searching in expanding circles around my current location up to 100 or so miles away. My 3790 seems to stop after only a few miles. Even when it finds potential matches, the list seems to be limited to a fixed number/distance.

Also, it would also be nice if more voice commands were recognized especially in View Map mode. For example, zoom in, zoom out, pan up, etc. I find myself still needing to use the touch screen for more commands than I was expecting.

I sure hope some of the "improvements" are made in future software updates.

If I recall

If I recall correctly, all Nuvi's are limited to showing the first 50 or so responds to a search. Don't think there is a miles limit however. Having said that there is a difference in searching the old fashion way and via Voice Command

For example a search on my 3790 for KFC restaurants results in showing 50 locations and the farthest one is 120 miles . That same search using Voice Command returns 1 result which is the one nearest my present location and the same as the first of the 50 returned in a regular search. On the other hand a search for Cracker Barrel shows 3 locations with the nearest one 490 miles away whether I search using Voice Command or not.
