Vermont or New Hampshire

I was stationed in Massachusetts in the Army a number of years back and I always enjoyed the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. If you are into hiking, there are several trails available up in the White Mountains. Absolutely gorgeous. (Probably in the 5-6 hours driving range.)

I was in a similar situation...

My wife and I had an extended weekend available to us in the beginning of July which was our 10th anniversary weekend. Family took our 4 and 7 year old for those days.
We were looking for something that did not eat up our time and money in travel. It was too brief to take a cruise out of NYC.

We chose to head up to Hyde Park, NY.
It is a quaint town just north of Poughkeepsie. We originally looked for a Bed and Breakfast but found a nice motel on the main drag that had so many positive reviews. Their free breakfast also helped to stretch the finances. (Roosevelt Inn). Since it was our anniversary we were able to make some reservations at the restaurants at the Culinary Institute of America. There is a nice sushi place in town too.

The closest drive-in to NYC is in Hyde Park.
There are some local hiking trails, an amazing walking bridge over the Hudson River, many beautiful and historic estates to see (Roosevelt's, Vanderbilt's).

In all it was a very nice trip.

Good luck,
Rob

Trips

Did you ever try Washington DC?
Not that far from Queens and it has a lot to see.
They have concerts outdoors on the weekends there is a sightseeing trolly system that you only pay once and can get off and on all day.
My wife & I have been there a few times and never saw the whole place.
God luck.

Block Island

Just came back from Block Island. Drive 3 hours from Queens to Montauk. Park the car and take the Viking Fleet ferry 20 miles to Block Island. (no cars on ferry)

Block Island is nice but the beach is better in Montauk.

We had a good long weekend!

As I haven't planned a real vacation this year, I have been taking weekend trips - easy and fun 2 day trips include: Newport, RI; Philadelphia, PA; Saratoga Springs, NY; Cape May, NJ.

New Hampshire or Kitty Hawk

As a Cannuck who has travelled throughout the US on vacations, I would recommend (as someone else has done) EITHER....

A trip to the White Mountain area of New Hampshire. Take a ride (car or train) up Mount Washington, golf all over the place. Lot's of hiking trails and then cross to New York for some hiking and great food in the Squaw Valley area....OR

Travel South along the coast down Delaware, cross the Chesapeake Bridge (unique) and then onto West Virginia and visit the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope or continue south to the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk

just a coule of suggestions that are both easily drivable but may exceed your 4 hours limit by a little!
