nuvi 265w crashed after map download

hi all, as i was installing my already paid for 2010 map upgrade to my nuvi, just before the install was complete, my computer crashed and although it is up and running, my 265 is far from it.it only has the dashboard function working and when you go looking for an address it pops up with no data available. it also will not display any streets or roads and when connected to garmin, says it has no map upgrades available and current maps onboard.have tried the web thingy as well to no avail, and now have gone to factory default but still no good.i paid for the lifetime maps but dont want to wait another 12 months to get the next one, after all i have paid for an up to date map and they wont reload it.anyone had this issue before, still waiting for garmin to reply, cheers and hope i can get it up and running as it is a nice piece of equipment and normally easy to use.... regards biggles

Did you download to your

Did you download to your computer? If yes go to Garmin folder. In my case .My computer, Local disk(c),then Garmin folder.Once you click on Garmin folder you will see Mapinstall.exe.Click on that and see if you can re-install maps.

By the way welcome to the site.

Good luck

Good luck. WIth luck, Charles45's solution is worth a try. If not, call Garmin by phone next week and see what they can do for you.

Lastly, remember that map updates come out quarterly, not annually. With luck, the next update (2011.20) may come out late this month.

Here's something to consider once you've got it working again--connect the GPS to your computer and back up all its files to your computer. That way, in case of a crash during map installation to the GPS, you can try copying the files from your backup back to your GPS. That may get you a functional GPS again. (It's also good if, when tinkering with files on the GPS, you accidently delete a critical file--or mistake your nuvi for a SD card and format the nuvi wink )

+1 what craigW said. When

+1 what craigW said.

When you get your Nuvi working correctly again, connect it to your computer and copy the Garmin folder/files to your hard drive for future backup use if you need it.

Actually for all Garmin users, this should be the first thing you do when you get your unit. After each software update, map update, etc., that works, I then save that folder/files to my hard drive so that I have the latest known working files saved if I need them.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

thanks and hi to all.ive

thanks and hi to all.ive been to the garmin folder in c drive but it only has a usb file .thats it. i dont think it has downloaded everything when the computer stopped.and because it has some info, not much,it seems to be telling the map updater that i'm already up to date.go figure....at the moment ,its just a paper weight on my desk.must be a way of getting back to the original map-default as it was installed on the unit, not from a disc or card.thanks again, and keep trying. grin

Map download

When you go to My Garmin Page and sign in.Click on manage maps,You should see details under City Navigator North America NT 2011.10 click on details. You should have the option to download again. If that is what you tried earlier Garmin will be the best bet.
