MapSource version 6.16.2.0 update is available

I installed this update but haven't actively used the program. Changes are:

Improved handling of invalid gpx files from devices.

Improved handling of missing components, MapSource will now display a message indicating the missing component.

Changed number of most recently used files from 4 to 10.

Fixed some untranslated strings.

Fixed an issue with saving as gpx and dxf in the Dutch localization.

Fixed a routing issue with third party map products.

Fixed several other routing issues.

Fixed an issue where MapSource would not remember the icon size setting correctly.

Fixed an issue with deleting waypoints from a route.

Fixed a map drawing issue.

Fixed display of ampersands on the map.

Fixed an issue with creating waypoints on certain features.

Fixed an issue with the undo function.

Done

Just downloaded and installed the update. Thanks for the heads-up. grin

New Routing Slider Technique

We've made some changes to the road slider in the routing preferences.

The most obvious change is that now there are only 5 settings where there were 7 before. But that's not all, we've actually changed the way this slider works and we hope this will work better for most of our users.

There were some issues with the old slider:

1. Setting a route to "shorter route" and "prefer minor roads" would yield really odd results.
2. Using the slider in conjunction with "faster route" would not really work at all with NT maps.
3. A feature most people are interested in: reliably avoiding highways, did not really work.

If you do not care about the road type, please leave the road slider in the middle. This will yield the best results and the fastest route calculation times.

If you would like to avoid major highways, set the slider into position 2 (between "minor roads" and the middle). This works fairly well now.

If you would like to avoid major highways and other larger roads, set the slider all the way to the left.

The two settings to the right will try harder to avoid small roads. But it is not necessary to set it if you just care about a fast/short route. MapSource will use Highways preferably already in the middle setting.

Now, some caveats: the slider works well if the map data contains enough roads for each road class. If there are not enough smaller roads the algorithm might fall back to highways even if you picked "minor roads". You might get better results by using position 2 in that case.

It is likely that MapSource will recalculate routes differently now for the "minor roads" / "prefer highways" setting. Sometimes the route might be a "better" one, sometimes it might get "worse". But overall we hope this change will allow users to calculate scenic routes more reliably.

If you get very odd results for Garmin map products, feel free to post a gdb file of the route and we will investigate.

We will keep working on routing improvements, one of the next releases will hopefully speed up routing as well.

My Bug

That was my bug report. I was rather surprised when I put an "&" in a POI title that it wasn't displayed but was instead displayed as a Windows hotkey. I am surprised they fixed it so quickly. It has only been about three weeks.

On a side note, is there any chance at all of ever seeing a Unix version available ? Got a new notebook due in my mailbox any day now, and it WON'T be running "the other stuff".

Ain't nuthin' never just right to do the things you wanna do when you wanna do them, so you best just go ahead and do them anyway ! (Rancid Crabtree, from Pat F McManus fame)

Did they fix the display issue?

The last 'update' changed the route display to be solid magenta with a black border, which was completely opaque and covered up everything underneath it like the route ID's and POi's. If the route was deselected, it turns transparent. This was a big drawback over previous versions.

Thanks

Does anyone know where to

Does anyone know where to get the FULL version of this software? I can only seem to find the updates, and I bought my GPS so long ago, I have no clue where my original install disk. Is there a legit way to get the full install of this software?

Kevin

It can be done

Follow this procedure:

Remember

Remember though that if you have a GPS with preinstalled maps there may not be any maps on your PC for Mapsource to use. The link provided my CraigW will give you the full version of Mapsource on your PC but it maybe void of map data until you update your GPS maps using the "install on GPS and Computer" option.

If I'm understanding correctly I can still use Mapsource for my 765 even though it came with preinstalled maps and I do not have a disk?
