New Map Downloads Via Disc or Computer- Problem Either Way

I recenlty purchased the 2011 Map update; tried to download at least 7 times; keep getting message that Garmin server quit and contact customer service, which I did. I learned: the disc offered instead of download is two versions behind the 2011 download; I pointed out to CS that no where on their site is this disclosed; finally, I was offered a disc ( cs just discovered that the 2001 disc was available) instead of the download- no refund of course- and promised that G would mail to me "today" no charge for mailing- that was two weeks ago. I've heard or received nothing. I am pretty disgusted with Garmin. Any other folks have similar experiences- the download is baloney.

A few questions

As much as it does have occasional issues, the download technique is preferred over a mailed disk. The "mailed disk install" is the last option so I'd like to see if we can get you updated via download. To do this, can you offer the following answers?

Also--please let us know when/if/how you succeed(ed) since your solution may help others in the future!

Did you buy numaps OneTime or numaps Lifetime?

Do you have a broadband connection? How fast? What Internet Provider? Is there a chance your ISP is creating the issue (e.g., you have a quota on daily/monthly downloads)?

How long before you get the "server quit" message? Is there a chance the computer is going to sleep during the download? Do you have a feeling for how far along in the download you are when the error crops up?

What browser do you use? If the error occurs very quickly, then your antivirus or firewall could be at fault. What do you use?

When did you last attempt to do the download? I ask this because the latest download procedure (effective May 25, 2010) uses a very different procedure than earlier downloads. If your last attempt did the pre-May-25 "download, then run one big 2GB file" procedure, then it'd be well worth trying the download again with the new Garmin download procedure.

We look forward to your response. Good luck.

Correction

I did just now receive the 2011 disc from Garmin

I have Charter cable

I have Charter cable broadband with no quota; the download is about 1/3 completed and quite; teh computer is not going to sleep; I am using Internet Explorer 8 with XP Pro SP 3. I also tried to download on my laptop, which is Windows 7. My downloads may have been tried prior to May 25th. I will try again. How do I run one big 2GB file procedure. Thanks for your response.

Aha!

Aha, this is all good news.

First, don't worry about the "run one big 2GB file" since that procedure is now history to the best guess of those of us here posting at POI Factory.

Second, it's certainly worth trying the DVD you just received since that'll end the need to download this time. As long as the map you finally get is 2011.10, you're up-to-date. Have the GPS connected to the computer as you run the DVD and you should update your Zumo map to 2011.10 and update or install Mapsource and the current map to your computer.

Third, since you past download attempts were pre May-25, future downloads may well work fine. This is especially important if you plan to buy future numaps OneTime or have purchased the numaps Lifetime update since a future need for downloads will recur--maybe as soon as late July.

I'm on dial-up

Since the disk only updates once a year, local BestBuy said the would do map updates for a fee, any body ever try this? If they do on-line it could be latest or is it a scam and they just load what ever they have?

alternative to dial up

If you are using a laptop, go to someplace that offers free wifi. Libraries, Starbucks, other coffee shops etc. but be prepared to spend up to 4 hours because of their speed.

.

Is the post-May 25 download procedure posted somewhere on this site? Or is it explained and evident during the procedure itself?

I have a lifetime update card from Amazon, but haven't used it yet. I am going to read up first to anticipate any problems.

I won't be able to download

I won't be able to download or try it again; I logged onto my Garmin account and there "are no downloads available" so-- I am now confined to the disc- note to self- no more business with Garmin.

I have been doing life time updates via download for for over a year now. My last was different that before - not sure if I like not having the file on my computer but I did find out some interesting things about the download procedures whilst talking to tech support.

First let me say their server rocks - my downloads have been full bandwidth and getting up as high as 16.0 mb/sec - now that is smokin for a 3gb file

My issues with the download was not enough space on my "C" drive for the temp file during map install - seems it needs at least 7gb of free space. There was no provision to direct this to another drive.

The interesting thing I found out is you can only download maps that are native to the unit -- meaning if you are like me and want to install europe on a 3790T you can't do it via download - you must install from disk through map source - weird -- I figured once you installed the map set then you could just do the download update -- nope according to the tech i spoke with.
