We're leaving central IL tomorrow for Pike's Peak, Rocky Mt. National Park, the Custer Battlefield, Mt. Rushmore, etc. and we're relying on our 255W to get us there and back. I've had it for over a year and it's never failed so far.
Have fun!
That sounds like a route full of real good sights.
Have Fun
Hi Lcoon.
Have fun on your trip. The drive up Pike's Peak can get a little scarry for those not used to driving in the mountains.

The Needles Highway drive is absolutely spectacular. Make sure you give yourself at least a half day or more to drive through the Badlands on your way out or back.

Check out the Barr Trail if you are heading towards the summit from the east. Great hiking and biking trail if you like that sort of activities. Have a fun and safe trip!

Acclimation
When you get to Colo Springs, kick back for a day to adjust to the elevation before you tackle the summit. It's a great trip as is Trail Ridge Road over Rocky Mountain Nat Park, but is more enjoyable if you aren't fighting headaches from the altitude change. Drink plenty of water, wear a hat - the UV is much stronger at higher elevations, bring a jacket! Let the lower gears assist you on the descents to save your brakes. You're gonna have a great time.

Close Enough
You'll be close enough to the Devil's Tower National Monument in Wyoming that missing it would be a shame.
Just a few hours from Rushmore or the Badlands, depending on what order you do the Black Hills sights.
Crazyhorse, near Rushmore, is also worth the price of admission.

Have a great vacation. Black Hills & Mt. Rushmore: The Needles Highway on route 87 takes you past Sylvan Lake where National Treasure Two was filmed. Of course if you are in a BIG motor-home, forget it.

My sister was sick the whole way through the mountains when we made a similar trip 34 years ago. I was 9 and she was 11. I was unhappy that she couldn't play in the snow at the summit of Pike's Peak. My parents did take some extra time to get us acclimated, but she didn't get better until we went down the other side of the mountains.
I hope you have a great trip and I'm sure you will NOT have similar troubles.
Nice Trip
Definitely stay hydrated before going up pikes peak and don't drink soda at the summit. You will regret it. Have fun.
Big trip
I drive tour buses for a living. Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Olympic training center and the Air Force academy are all wonderful visits. There's also a nice cowboy supper place the Flying T I think is a nice dinner show with music. There's a lot in the Rocky Mountain NP area. Estes Park is a nice touristy place to go then to the park where their is lots of ares to hike bike walk or drive. If you go up to Estes Park drive through the Big Thompson Canyon. If you have a SUV drive the old trail ridge road, it's very scenic. Rushmore and crazy horse are very nice. Little Bighorn Battlefield nice to see and here the stories of the battle. It's a good visit. Big Horn Mountains are very beautiful as well. The tips listed by others are well advised. Principally drink water, watch out for alcohol and caffeine. They will actually dehydrate you. I see at least one person on every trip get sick from dehydration. Enjoy your trip.

Good show and dinner
...There's also a nice cowboy supper place the Flying T I think is a nice dinner show with music...
It's the Flying W Ranch and is located just north of the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. Call for reservations and info. They've been at it for over 50 years! Great family oriented show and a meal for a very reasonable price.
