POI Files Management?

Hi All,

I have a Garmin 7xx series device. And a POI (.GPI) file with hundreds of locations in multiple cities and countries.

What I am looking for, is a good program that imports this file, and help me manage those locations as in Edit Names, delete duplications, and split them into multiple POI files, one for each city. And save each as a separate GPI or GPX file so that I can add them all to my Garmin device using the Garmin POI Loader.

I have downloaded (MyPoi Manager) already and I did all the sorting and splitting. But then I could not find a button to Sync, or save the updated file!

So do you recommend a good program that does that? Or is there a trick to save the export the modifications I made with MyPoi Manager?

Thanks all.

Where is .gpi file from?

Where did this .gpi file come from?

The poi.gpi file is the

The poi.gpi file is the output file created when you load your csv/gpx, wav, bmp input files with POI Loader. This poi.gpi file is the file that your nuvi uses/reads to display your custom pois.

I had a Garmin nuvi 710, and I just bought a new nuvi 715. So I used the Garmin POI Loader to import the POI from my old device. Then tried to edit it, and clean it up before adding it to the new one.

Thanks.

Program to Convert POI so it can be edited.

Try GPSBabel. Reportedly you can convert your poi.gpi file to GPX where you can then edit the resulting file with MapSource or other GPX editor.

http://www.gpsbabel.org/capabilities.shtml

I have used GPSBabel to convert files but have not yet tried the .gpi conversion yet.

Good Luck.

I assume that you do not

I assume that you do not have the source gpx/csv file---only the gpi file. It would be much easier with source file(s). I think there may be some accuracy concerns trying to extract from gpi file. I am not familiar with any programs that do this, but I have read some discussions about this.

How many?

VidER

How many locations are part of this POI.GPI file that came from the GARMIN/POI folder on your GPS?

The reason I ask is whether it would be better to load them from source files. Did you keep a backup of your source files?

I just tried

I just tried this online program with one of my gpi files http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/extra/

I let it convert my file (about 2700 locations) to gpx and saved it.

I then used EPE written by our own TurboCC to open the new gpx file. It took many minutes to get it open but I was then able to work on it.

Program to Convert POI so it can be edited.

VIDER,

I just used GPSBabel to convert 3 different GPI files I have back to GPX. The largest file had about 10,000 entries. After conversion I was then able to open and view the results in GeePeeEx Editor, MapSource and Extra_POI_Editor V4.60.

A cursury glance at the coordinates and waypoint names looks good.

My GPI were created from GPX files that included address and phone information in discret fields. However after the conversion from GPI to GPX this information was lost. Only the waypoint/poi name and partial comment field were converted and present in the GPX file.

Thanks

Thank you Guys.

I have managed to clean up and split my POI files using a free program called (POIEdit 2007).

The interface is not as clean and easy to work with as (MyPoi Manager) but at least I was able to export the result file.

Thanks guys.
