Multiple categories - what does it do?

Hi,

I have a 760 that does not support multiple categories. It does not even support single category. The field category is simply ignored, but used in MapSource.

Some members here told me that new GPS support multiple categories. How does it work. It seems it works only for Favorites. True?

I would have liked it to work as well for regular POI files. By using categories, one could regroup and search for POIs easily by using the different category keywords.

Anyone can confirm? Anything else you can add about categories?

Thanks,

Turbo

.

I do use categories on my 775T, loaded into my SD card. I create a folder on the computer named Garmin, then add the folder POI. After that, I just add BBQ, Costco, Red Light Cam folders etc. inside the POI folder. Each one gets it's own folder.

Upload via the loader, and done. Choose Custom POI's and you see all of them.

Yes, this works on my 760 too.

But the new multiple categories supported by the GPS use the keyword <gpxx:Category> in the GPX file. This is supposed to help in dividing the POI in categories.

One POI can have multiple categories. I would guess you can make search with them.

Ahhh, I see what you mean now

I just use sub-folders eg. Food, then add BBQ, etc. folders inside it.

I think it works only for Favorites in the 1XXX and XX5 units as well. I've never tried it, but others have reported some success with using the categories.

The way it works on the supported models is when you save a location as a favorite including ones sent to gps using google, bing etc.You can go to edit for that favorite and you have the option to select a category or make a new one of your choice.Once completed your favorites will show under the category you have assigned it to.You will see on the gps screen all favorites or the list of categories for the favorites.

Using Mapsource you can load all favorites to it and select up to 16 categories. Here is that process.

1. Hook gps up to computer using usb cable.
2. Bring up map source.
3. Click on Waypoints then click on Transfer at top of page and select receive from device and click on it. You will now see your favorites.
4. Click on edit, preferences and click the waypoint categories.
5. Change the 1-16 as needed for the categories you want listed on the gps. Not necessary to change all of them. Hit ok after each one you select until you complete.
6. Go back to view at top and click show user data tabs.
7. Now click on the waypoint and put check mark in the category you want for that favorite. Complete all waypoints.
8. Select transfer, send to device and put check mark in waypoints only. Click send.

A while back using Extra Poi Editor.I took some custom pois and assigned them the same category for each of them.Named the gpx file temp.gpx and pasted in the Garmin gpx folder. They were added to my favorites under the category I used.

.

Ok. Thanks.

Does the GPS handles more than one categories for a single POI, or only MapSource?

You can assign more then

You can assign more then one favorite to the same category. You have to do them one at a time though using the gps.Using Mapsource when you transfer favorites to it you can go down the complete list and assign them.As per my earlier post I have in the past using only one category for several custom pois and added to favorites using your program EPE.By pasting the gpx file into the Garmin Gpx folder using temp.gpx

To add to my above post Turbocc I played around with the favorites tonight and found when you edit a favorite on the gps you can actually assign more then one category for the same favorite. The same for Mapsource you can select more then one category. In each case they will show on the gps under all the categories you selected for the one favorite. For example you could have a bank name show up under the category banks and also have it show under category address book.
