Yet another new Nuvi announced

Garmin has announced what should be the lowest priced Nuvi yet, a Nuvi 1100. It looks basically like a 1200 without TTS. Details can be found at:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=64700

New Nuvi

Never could find a price on their site.
How low can they get in dollars.

Looks like

Looks like they are still thinking about it smile

My guess since the list price of a 1200 is 139.99US, the 1100 will be 99.99US. I think they will want to get it under a hundred dollars.

You would think by now all

You would think by now all new models would include announcing street names. No matter how low the price.

It's all about segmenting the market.

The difference in Cost of Goods Sold to Garmin is very little between the high-end end and bare bones units. Garmin is rightfully getting people to pay for the features they want. Therefore, there's little economic justification to add speaking street names to this unit.

It's good for a backup unit

It's good for a backup unit but no hurry! I'll wait until it close out, and the price will drop 50% off.

If we only knew

David hit the nail on the head. Many devices in a product line may be virtually identical under the skin. It is often firmware or a minor component that sets the models apart. The practice is not limited to a product or a brand. When feasible, the manufacturer will produce one item, then "tweak" it so that the additional function will command a higher selling price with minimal production costs.

This is not a new concept either. 50 years ago a popular business tabulating machine was sold to two different price points; one ran twice as fast as the other and sold for considerably more. The difference: a relay that introduced a dummy cycle. The upgrade to make the machine run twice as fast: unplug the relay.

Yes, that's the way it works. Practically no production cost increase can yield a large retail price increase. But that's what competition is for. It leaves room for someone to offer something better for less money.

I saw this in the store just a few days ago. I think it was Wal-mart, but I'm not certain of that. Store price was $99. I've followed the link provided and read the spec, and they say that the device does not have blue tooth and does not display the speed limit on the screen, but the picture that I saw on the Garmin 1100 box had a speed limit sign in the bottom left of the screen, and a small round telephone icon on the right below the zoom-in and zoom-out controls, so I'm not clear on what the device's capabilities really are.

I don't know about you guys,

I don't know about you guys, but for me TTS is a must. I don't have time to take my eyes off the road to be peering at a GPS. It's OK not to have if you have a passenger with you.

.

The nuvi 1100 is apparently available at Walmart stores (at least in the SoCal area) for ~$99. Looks as if it's an in-store only item (so far) since it's not listed anywhere on Walmart's website. See the following for a bit more info:

NO WAY

should Garmin be putting out new units until they can get the ones they already have out fixed. Put all those programmers and techs to work fixing issues with all the bad ones out there. They never seem to understand what the issues are or learn from continuously making mistakes.

Simple economics. Garmin will continue pushing out buggy products as long as folks continue buying them.

I'm dumbfounded by all the folks who complain about their Nuvi and yet rush out and buy the newest model as soon as its released.

Basic, basic, basic

If all you want is basic GPS then this is what you want. Most of us prefer more bells and whistles.

Voice Turn By Turn

Voice Turn By Turn directions is must have for me with an automotive GPS. I'll pass on the lower priced GPS models that lack that feature.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Same here.Saying street

Same here.Saying street names should be standard with all models now.

It may be a first time user model

But if you have the turn by turn with street name, speed limit posting, and other features you will always fell these are required. It will still help you to get to your destination and do it for less cost.

I wonder......

How many Nuvis have been released. About 10x as many as the old Streetpilots.

You should know by now that is not Garmin's business model. You know the one where the customers are the beta testers?

Ya, that one.

I can't imagine using a GPS without TTS. Constantly looking at the map would create a driving hazard.

TTS

I agree that TTS is a useful feature, but it is still possible to navigate with the voice prompts even if you don't have TTS ... "Turn right in 100 feet" instead of "Turn right on tenth street".

I used to navigate quite easily with my nuvi 350 way back using just the attention/alert tone (I turned off all voice prompts) which was removed on all subsequent nuvis. I was so used to just hearing the tone and glancing at the screen for the turn instruction.

I think the 1450 is the equivalent of the 750 with a larger screen and without Mp3.

Low price ..Low spec

You are getting exactly what you are paying for, a low spec unit at a low price. Retailers will love it, once the customer is in the store they will try to switch them up to the higher priced units.
No need for life time map updates, just trash the old unit once a year and buy a new one.
