Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I need some help with the TourGuide feature. I also noticed throughout this forum, other 750 users have reported the same problem, so maybe it can not be done.

No matter what I try, I am unable to get the proximity alert to trigger using a TourGuide alert.

I have scoured this website and followed every link and sub-link on the subject that I can. I have carefully followed Gary Hayman's website on TourGuides, and nothing I do seems to work on my Nuvi. Which is terrible frustrating because following Gary's website, it seems so simple. Until you try to do it on a 750.

My Nuvi is up to date.
The .csv .bmp and .mp3 files are all from this site and are good. ( as would be expected )
My syntax is correct. It has been checked and rechecked.
No double extensions or misspellings.
The word TourGuide is correct in all three files.
I have tried putting the word TourGuide first in the file name, as well as at the end of the file name.

I use the manual mode in the POI Loader to specify my radius. The POI Loader reports back that all points were loaded with success.
I can see and turn on the proximately alerts within my Nuvi, as well as the TourGuide is set to AutoPlay.
In 2D I can see the icon, in 3D I just see a grey orb.
I have tried converting the .csv to a .gpx.
I have tried viewing the file in 2D and 3D.

Nothing seems to trigger the proximity alerts. Has anybody been able to accomplish using the TourGuide feature on a Nuvi 750?
Am I missing something really simple?

Thanks for the time.

Looks good

It looks good to me. I can use TourGuides and get audible alerts within the radius set with my nuvi 750. From here at POI Factory, I have the Schools POI set for a 550-foot radius and the RestAreasCombined set for 15000 feet. In both cases, I get the audible mp3 file alert at my radius setting and when near the POI location, I see the icon I chose in 3D mode.

So all I can say is that TourGuides work for me with my 750.

What happens if you create a route to one of your TourGuide POI locations as a final destination? When arriving, do you get a visual and audio alert as you expect?

Are you sure about the double extension?Did you set your computer to view extensions?

What distance did you set?

Did you use EPE?

RBC wrote:

Did you use the Extra POI Editor to convert to .gpx. It has a feature that let's you set a tourguide distance for each entry and thus you can use "express mode" in POI Loader.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

Charlesd45,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am absolutely positive about the double extension.
I even had it double checked.
That's why I am wondering if it is something to due with the 750's?

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

Jgermann;

Thank you for your prompt reply, I set the distance for 5280 feet.

No it should work on the

No it should work on the 750.The usual problem is the double extension or not named the same except the extensions. You stated that you have double checked all of that.

Can you give example how they are named?

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

jgermann;

Yes, I found out about the POI Editor through this forum, and to keep things simple, I just used a one line .csv file and converted that to a .gpx file using POI Editor. And that was the only file I loaded using the POI Loader software. I then ran did a simulated drive through and I still cannot get the alert.
I'm sure it's something really simple.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

Peets_Coffee TourGuide.mp3
Peets_Coffee TourGuide.bmp
Peets_Coffee Tourguide.csv ( or .gpx when converted )

I can make the files available if necessary

Ok, tell us how you turned alerts on in your unit

Try renaming the .csv name so it is the same case as the other two (Peets_Coffee TourGuide.csv instead of Peets_Coffee Tourguide.csv)

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

My mistake in typing, the G in Guide is capitalized.
I wish it was that simple.

Thanks

The following link may help:

Manual

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I have the manual that came with the unit, and I downloaded a manual from Garmin, via your link.
Is there something in there that I am missing?

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I found that site several days ago. I made a simple one coordinate entry as described and still no alert?
Its my understanding that it makes no difference on this unit for a .gpx or .csv file.
But I was willing to try.
Thanks again

MP3

Is the MP3 player working OK for music files?

What Coordinates?

Here's a thought. What coordinates did you enter?

Please show them exactly as entered into your csv file with commas...

Perhaps the lat and long aren't reversed. (For whatever reason, most mapping programs display latitude followed by longitude but Garmin POI files must be entered with longitude followed by latitude.)

My first attempt to enter coordinates into google landed me in the Antarctic... maybe you've done the reverse with your poi coordinates?

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

Perfect,
I just listened to a one hour .mp3 file using the mp3 player through the FM transmitter last night.
Perfect.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide not working

This file was downloaded from this site, so I assumed it was correct.

Thanks

Another Thing I Messed Up....

Are you using an SD card?
If so, did you load this file to that SD card?
If so, did you let the GPS transfer the poi file into the gps unit itself?
If not...

Is the old poi file still on the gps unit itself? (poi.gpi)

If so, go ahead and delete the one on the gps unit.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I do not use an SD card for the POI file.
I allow the POI loader to load the files directly to the unit.
I went ahead and deleted the old POI.gpi file and then re-installed directly to the unit using the POI Loader. I am able to see the icons, but still no alert.
Thanks

I see a flaw but don't know if it will break the TourGuide func

Garmin .csv files use only 4 fields; I assume the others are ignored, but may be problematic. Perhaps others can answer for sure.

The 4 fields are Lon, Lat, Name, Other Info (typically address).

Using a copy, try opening this file in Extra_POI_Editor, then save it back as a .csv (Garmin) and see if it puts the right info into the 1st 4 fields. Then use POI Loader to copy this file and the other 2 to your 750 and see if this helps.

CraigW asked this earlier but you didn't reply to his questions: "What happens if you create a route to one of your TourGuide POI locations as a final destination? When arriving, do you get a visual and audio alert as you expect?"

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I just finished simulating a simple route, and I did not get any proximity alerts.
Thanks

Space in File Name??

Is that a space in the file name? If so, have you tried it without the space?

.

Let's start from scratch and see if you get a normal proximity alert. Reload the csv file without putting TourGuide in the name. Then route past the location and see if you get a normal proximity alert.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

I have tried every combination possible.
Including space/no space. Underscore/no underscore.
So far, nothing is working.

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

Well, that was nice. Without the TourGuide name, I was able to get a normal proximity alert.
So, what's wrong with the TourGuide alert?
thanks for your help.

.

Now let's try putting TourGuide in the file name. But let's change the name in case that's causing the problem. So name all of the files testing_TourGuide.

And change the alert distance to 1000 feet.

Tourguide has separate..

thanks for your help.

On my 765t GPS, here is what I see when I set some options

Tools > Settings > Proximity Points (I have to scroll down to see this)

I have two choices
Proximity Alerts and TourGuide

Under Proximity alerts I see
<> Custom POIs as a choice PLUS I see a button on the last line for Audio which gives choices of
Single Tone
Continuous Tone

Under TourGuide I see
Auto Play
Prompt
Off

How is your unit NOW set????

Nuvi 750 TourGuide files not working

With the TourGuide name, the alerts quit working. I also tried it without an icon or mp3 file, just to see if the default sound would make a difference. It didn't. Still having trouble with the TourGuide aspect.
Thanks
