There's a New procedure for numaps City Navigator North America NT updates

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for a bit of duplication, but I want to start a message thread with a subject that'll make sense to all nuvi owners with lifetime map updates or doing a onetime update. What follows is the new procedure being used for installing the new 2011.10 map to the nuvi 8xx series, but I think this will become the new standard for all CNNANT updates. If not true, we'll correct it at a later date. Here's the new procedure:

As someone else reported recently, Garmin has an entirely new installation process for City Navigator NA NT updates. You start by downloading a 3MB updater, then run that. No more Download Manager as in the past.

As the Updater starts, you're offered standard or advanced installation. I chose advanced and see that the default update setting for my nuvi 855 is to: 1) install all of North America and 2) to install to my GPS only. So I imagine that if you don't go with the Advanced option, your GPS will be updated but your computer and Mapsource will NOT. If true, and if you want the new map on your computer, go for Advanced and change the default to "install to GPS and computer."

Interesting. By choosing to install to my GPS and computer, I'm warned that the download will take longer.

Since my download process has just started, I may be wrong in this--but it appears that we no longer will have the executable 2GB file downloaded which can be saved on hard disk or to DVD-R for a future installation. If true, and if you have multiple Garmins under lifetime maps, it definitely appears that a download will be required for each unit--none of this "download once, then use the 2GB file to update all lifetimed nuvis you own." Updating multiple units will take longer from now on.

One nice thing about this new updater is that if you have maps to be used by Mapsource in a custom location (think d:\garmin, for instance), the updater will correctly find your old maps and offer to install this new map to the same location.

Copying pdf to Word doc

I'm just catching up with this thread, canuk, so your question about putting a pdf in a Word doc may already have been answered. If not, here are a few simple ways to go about it...

Normally you could use Adobe Reader's Snapshot Tool to copy an image of a pdf (either all of it or just a section of it). The Snapshot Tool's icon is a camera, and appears on your toolbar. If that icon is not visible, you can get to the tool via the Adobe Reader menu: Tools > Select & Zoom > Snapshot Tool.

When you highlight something with the Snapshot Tool, what you highlighted is copied to your Clipboard. Then you simply paste that to your Word document.

In the case of the Garmin instructions referred to here, however, the pdf's security settings prevent Adobe's Snapshot Tool from being used. No worries; there is a workaround.

Download a useful little screen-capture utility called Snippy. It lets you copy any part of your screen onto your Clipboard. From there, you simply paste the image into your Word document. Snippy is free, and is a utility I use throughout the day. One place you can get it is http://www.filecluster.com/downloads/Snippy.html

Converting Files To Another Format

I realize this is off the original topic for this thread, but for Canuk and others who may want/need to convert files, the following may be helpful: There is a website that offers to convert PDF and many other file formats for free (up to 100MB) to many other formats (including .doc):

PDF to Word

I would like to save the user guide which is in PDF format into a word document. Is that possible ?

You would need to have Adobe Writer to do that.

OR

Depending on the version of Adobe Reader you have (works in V.8 at work, but not in V.9 at home. Also may not work on "Secure" documents).

In the PDF file, place the cursor at the beginning of document.

Hold down the "Cntrl" key and the "Shift" key.

Press the "End" key once and then release all keys. Entire document is now highlighted.

Hold down the "Cntrl" key and the "Shift" key, then press "Insert" key and then release all keys.

Open Word and use "Shift" + "Insert" to paste (or "Cntrl + v" if you prefer).
