nuvi and Favorites punctuation - saga of the lost apostrophe

Here's a question for you. Recently, I saved a location to my 855 and wanted to add the business name which includes an apostrophe. Very odd-- as far as I can tell, my 855 inventory of punctuation marks includes only a hyphen. My 750, on the other hand, has a full inventory of every punctuation mark I could desire.

Am I missing a menu or does the 855 have just a single punctuation mark that can be added via the nuvi keyboard?

The good news is that the 855 can handle Favorites with additional punctuation. By importing the 855's Favorites to Mapsource, then editing them to include apostrophes and other punctuation, then exporting the revised favorites back to the nuvi, the nuvi can see and use the Favorites with punctuation that it's unable to enter itself. This does end in a duplicate Favorite for every edited Favorite, in my case, one with the added "'" and one without, so it's necessary to then delete the original unpunctuated Favorite in the nuvi.

I wonder if anyone's done list of the various nuvi models regarding those that have an extensive list of punctuation and those with only a hyphen.

855 and 755T special characters

CraigW, maybe I misunderstand your statement about the 855, but both my 755T and 855 have a full collection of special characters when entering or editing names for Favorites.

I certainly expected your findings to be mine, too, but they aren't. Just to check, I have the latest firmware (4.70) and use American English setting both for my Text Language and Keyboard.

Yet when I save a location, I'm first in the Alphabet mode (A-Z, space, and Upper Case switcher). The only other option I have is to touch the 123 button, and that takes me to the numerals 1-0 and the hyphen. I have no other punctuation here (although I do on my 750). I can switch back and forth from 123 and ABC on my 855, but have no other choices beyond A-Z, 1-0, and the "-". On my 750, the special characters appear as you say they will. I do note that the size of the touch-buttons on my 855's numeral-hyphen entry page are much larger (same height but about 2.5x as wide as on the alphabet screen) than on my 750, so there's no room for the special characters. There's also no "down-arrow" to take me to another page.

So 855 users, what do you see on your numeral-hyphen entry page? Do you have more punctuation than the hyphen? Are your numeral touch-buttons especially wide like mine? Do we have the same firmware and keyboard/Text Entry selections chosen?

Is it possible that there is more than one version of 855s hardware-wise?

Any other thoughts? Maybe I'll try a hard reset unless someone has a better suggestion.

Confused as can be, I look forward to more replies.

It sounds

It sounds like you maybe using the ABCDE keyboard. Try using the Qwerty keyboard (Tools - Settings - System - Keyboard Layout). It should give you the screen with an apostrophe on it when you press the &?% button to the left of the Done button on the keyboard screen.

Yet more

A Hard Reset has no effect on my problem. Still no punctuation.

Now to reinstall my old Favorites that were lost during the reset.

Thanks!

Darn, I shoulda waited on the hard reset. Now I have to reinstall all my old favorites.

Yes, you're right. The qwerty keyboard choice now gives me what's been missing on the 855. Thanks.

I will note that there is a difference between my 750 and the 855 in this respect. The 750 in ABCDE and QWERTY modes give me punctuation. The 855 in ABC mode does not while the QWERTY choice does.

Thanks again. Problem solved.

Just

Just rename your backup copy of Current.gpx (if you have one wink) to Temp.gpx and place it in the GPX folder on your Nuvi. That should restore your favorites.

Glad I could help.

Too late wink, I've already Mapsourced them back to the unit.

Thanks again for the keyboard help. I will say that for small touch screen keyboards, I do prefer the ABC keyboard with slightly larger touch-buttons than the QWERTY but I guess I can't have ABC and punctuation simultaneously on the 855. I'll try QWERTY for a while but may go back to ABC if this old geezer can't adjust.
