Mobile Speed Cameras - Washington DC Area

There is a speed camera car often parked on the grass on Mass Ave, a few blocks towards downtown from Wisconsin.

Although these mobile speed cameras may move, I think it would be useful to have a POI file showing where they are often located. Is there a way to have a designation indicating that the speed camera is mobile and not always present?

Mobile Speed Cameras - Washington DC & Baltimore

For reference, DC & Baltimore post speed & red light camera locations on their web sites. Don't know how current the information is, but it's a starting place. I haven't tried correlating the web data with the current poi files to see the differences.

No solution except to ban them

I don't think there is a solution for locating mobile speed cameras, since they move around. Putting all the locations where they might be in the file, would create alot of false alerts and would be more work and just as bad as having no locations in the file (which is what we have today for mobile speed traps).

The best solution is to bad photo enforcement period. Unfortunately, it is difficult to do given the money they are stealing from motorists with these things.

Mobile Speed Cameras

I created a file here, http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13797. While these locations are primarily for "speed traps", the same could be done for the mobile cameras. It might give you enough warning of the possibility that the camera was there at some time. Pin pointing the locations would be difficult at best and would require the assistance of someone familiar with the area. While I am not a big fan of this site, it is helpfull if you are trying to locate some of the locations. http://www.speedtrap.org/
I used it to create the file above so I could be aware of the areas that WILL slow down due to "Blue Light Fever"

No Solution Except?

Even though they are mobile and may not be there all of the time, I see speed traps at the same locations on a frequent basis (like once a week for some to almost every day for others). Everyone has a different criteria as to what an acceptable false alarm rate is, but it doesn't take too many tickets in a year to loose your license. I would prefer to know where the "favorite" speed trap locations and accept the false alarm rate rather than take a chance.

The best "solution"

Post was titled "No solution Except?"

The best "solution" for everyone is to observe speed limits and maintain proper distance from the car in front of us. Then, speed cameras become moot.
