Garmin’s solution, no problem, send it back!

I bought a 755T in March this year. It had 3.8 on it, no problems. Updated it and got 3.9.You all know about 3.9 problems. I called Garmin, told them all the new problems since 3.9 update. No problem, just send it back, that is what Andrew said. So I did. In about a week I had a new 755T. (I now have 2 complete 7X5 accessories). First thing I did was to see what I had. It was 3.9! You know that I had to call again when it froze for 30 min. No problem, Peter told me. We will send you a 765T because it is a better unit. When it came, I hoped for the best. Boy was I a fool. Just as bad as the others I had. On the phone again, got Chris. I told my story. No problem, just send it back and we are going to send you a new 1390T for all my troubles. The only thing that I will miss is the power bracket. Garmin did pay for the shipping on all 3 units I returned. I should receive it this Friday. What are the odds that I will be calling again?
If anyone needs all the parts for a 7x5 (traffic cord, power mount and bracket) for a second car, email me and I will be happy to send it to you. Your only cost will be a package of Oreos!

ridiculous...

Seems as though Garmin would rather repeatedly swap out "defective" units with the exact same v3.90 firmware than actually fix the issues that are being caused by v3.90 firmware... rolleyes

This is just plain silly. Reverting back to v3.60 corrects all issues I had with v3.90. This seems a bit too much for them to comprehend.

We've been waiting for how long now for an update...5 months now? 3.90 was released on Dec 18, 2009

I have XT and I don't find the age of the basemap and support files to be a problem. The routing map is far more important, and at least on my XT installation can be updated when new maps come out.

Something for your troubles

At least they gave you an updated unit for your troubles - I took a hard look at the 1390T and settled for the 1690 because of the Google Local search capabilities. Since Garmin is manufacturing using a BCC (Best Cost Country) I am afraid that (just send it back) is their best option from a cost standpoint. The likelihood that they are serviced in the US is very slim and are more than likely serviced at the point of manufacture. The PCB is also more than likely a throw away item, as it is more cost effective to replace the PCB rather than spend the time to repair it.

I think your patience was warranted (no pun intended) in this case with the upgrade; that's if you do not mind that the 1xxx series has no MP3 capabilities.

765t

I just sent back my 765t with the screen touch problem, I also installed the 3.9 upgrade to the firmware, so I have the issue with the delayed key. The thing I want them to fix is the bad keying. I think they might have a problem with too many device with too many different firmware, a similar problem HP has with its' printers, some people with older printer are waiting for drivers that work in Windows 7.

I would love to have the

I would love to have the extra mounts and such. I have a 265wt and it appears to use the same mounts.

Sorry, in fairness I am sending it to the first person that emailed me last night.
That mount would not fit any 2xx model. Paul

Built In Units

I guess this is where I don't understand so many complaining about the price of a built in unit. Is all this frustration worth the effort when you can have a great unit built in when you buy a new car (and not have to replace it at some point in time)? I also have a Garmin unit (1490T) which I like very much. But all the firmware updates really make you wonder what the heck is going on and if you load it what will it screw up. Very scary...

Ther are plenty of Garmin

Ther are plenty of Garmin units out there that don't have update problems. It seems based what I have seen on the posts it is mostly confined to a couple of series that post problems all the time.

Being released...

My main point is how can they put out new units and have to issue firmware updates continuously. Wouldn't you agree the unit should word properly when it is released? It is frustrating to see all the fixes coming out and then see those fixes create more problems. Most of the problems you are seeing are with the newer units. People have either given up on getting issues resolved on older units or their warranties have expired. My son finally gave up on the battery issues he was having on his 750. Don't get me wrong I like Garmin very much, I just wish they would get their act together.

I agree with you 100% .My point was for the OP not to dis-regard all of them.Garmin does have problems with a lot of the newer models released. One series not so new or that old either with big problems every time you turn around.Based on posts on this forum. You can see all that pcatch135 has gone through.I have a 265 and I have downloaded every update as soon as it comes out with no problem as to date.Hope this don't come back on me.

great deal!

Nice . 1390T is much better unit than 755T. You got a great deal in exchange to your suffering. good luck with it.

Can't wait until my friend

Can't wait until my friend pcatch135 reports on it.I guess we need to have a forum topic on what units are doing good.Seems like a lot of users happy with the 1490.
