Deleting Maps

Any one know how to delete unwanted maps in 755T. Recently upgraded to 2011 and find I have Mexico. The chances at my age of ever seeing let alone using a GPS in that country is very, very slim. I would like to get rid of the Mexican map portion and free up some space. If that's possible?

For the sake of correctness, deleting Mexico from the map is doable but not easily done unless you have your maps in mapsource format. I would not say it's worth the effort.

All the maps in your GPS are compiled into a single file probabley named gmapprom.img and with mapsource you could simply build another mapset and simply omit mexico and replace the img file you are using. The other option is manual, messey, and requires a few tools. I don't even want to go describe it.

If you "could" delete Mexico you would only reclaim about 107 meg of internal memory. Doesn't the 755 have 4gig of internal memory (like the 765)? If that's the case, it sure doesn't seem like saving that amount of memory serves any usefull purpose considering ththe 760 and 755 only have 2 gig and memory space has neve been an issue(I have to wonder what the advantage in freeing up memory in the 755 might be). You probably have over 1.5 gig free mem in that unit now.

Deleting Maps

Thanks for the come back. I have 1.766 Mb left in memory. Just thought if it was simple thing I would do it? You've made up my mind! Thanks again, love this page!!!

I will soon be faced with the same issue on my aging 660. Each map update is almost 100MB larger than the previous one. With 270MB free after this most recent update, that gives me about 2 more before I have to start deleting files to make room and even that is just a temporary solution.

In my case, deleting voice files would get me the biggest gain. Deleting all the non-English voices would gain me 250MB. Deleting the help files doesn't gain me enough to bother with - only about 14KB. Even deleting any unused vehicle files would only net me a little over 4MB.

I have to agree with the

I have to agree with the voice file del, it gained the most. However doesn't Garmin sell those Mapsource CD anymore? I thought they still do.

I think you can still get

I think you can still get them for 10 dollars.

Just load the rest on the SD card. No big deal.

885 Memory

Anybody know how much Internal Memory the 885 comes with ?

Freeing Memory

There are simple ways to free up some memory.

First delete all voices except the ones you're likely to use. If you're not likely to need German, Swedish, Turkish, Polish, etc. then delete them. These range in size from about 1 meg to 15 meg. I estimate that you could free up 250 to 300 Meg.

You could delete unnecessary vehicles, but this is only about 9 meg and probably isn't worth the bother.

Then store all your POIs on the SD card. That can also free up some memory, depending on the number and size of your POIs..

Nuvi 750 with SD card

I have a Nuvi 750 with very little free memory even after freeing up files. I bought the Europe file and have it on a SD card. When we go to Europe I put on my Nuvi 750 only the map of the area we are going to visit using Mapsource and take the SD card just incase. My Nuvi works the same when using the map on the SD card as it does with the internal map.

MB or GB? If only 1.766MB I would free something up pronto.

Since I've not actually "hit the wall" yet, I hope it calculates first that there won't be enough room rather than going through the whole download (at USB 1.1 speed) only to find out at the very end that it won't fit - do you know?

Also, if it gives you the option to load the map to an SD card, does it automatically delete the current gmapprom.img file or does it leave it there, giving you 2 maps?

This just happened to me on the latest update with my Zumo. I didn't bother to delete stuff from my Zumo before I began the update process.

Here's what I experienced.

1. Downloaded the maps from the Garmin servers. Took about 45 minutes or so.

2. Double clicked on the EXE to extract and install the maps.

3. Took about 10 minutes before I saw ANY evidence of the application "doing anything".

4. Took about another 10 - 15 minutes for the maps to extract and get to the point that it started to communicate with the GPS unit.

5. At this point, it indicated that there was not enough room and prompted me to select the "region" I wanted to install.

6. From there, the application then updated the maps which took about 40 minutes or so.

7. If you want to install the rest of the maps, you can run the MapInstall program or you can use MapSource.

Either way, this process creates a file named GMAPSUPP.IMG with the additional maps. The GMAPPROM.IMG file is not affected by the supplemental maps. Two separate map notations will show up on your Settings/Wrench > Map > Map Info screen. But performance-wise, you won't notice the difference.

In fact, it's possible that you might get BETTER performance out of your unit by having MORE free space on the device memory.

.

One tip to minimize the time spent extracting each time you run the downloaded .exe file is to pre-decompress the file using 7-Zip or WinRAR to a different folder on your hard drive. Then, run the setup.exe file contained within that folder.

Thanks MM

Thanks for the rundown, MM. I have the MapInstall program installed on my PC but I've never had a reason to use it, so I've never seen the process it goes through or how it works.

Looks like after a couple more map updates, I'll get the chance to find out what it does and how it works.

DorkusNimrod - Like you, I use the 7-Zip program to extract the compressed files & folders one time. Then I run the setup.exe file in the Windows sub-folder.

I guess i'm still little unclear sorry could you not have the rest of the DL go to your installed SD card?

--

.

Yes.

But it doesn't do it automatically.

You will need to run MapInstall, choose the areas that were not installed to the device memory, and select the SD card as the destination.

Slow refresh

I inadvertantly loaded Mexico with my last map update. Now my 660T is extremely slow when zooming way out and navigating to another area.

Since going to Mexico is not in any future travel plans, I guess I'll reinstall without it. In Mapsource, Mexico is rather detailed and I'm sure the unit is really loaded down when it's trying to draw the screen.

Anyone else notice this?

Edit: Yes, I deleted all the unused voice files, etc.
