How does it work?

I downloaded some POI's into my garmin C550. Now when I load a route to a location....How do the POI's come into play?

RWO

They are locations you can choose for your route

On your GPSr,select\Where to? > Extras > Custom POIs. When you hit the Custom POIs button, your added POIs will show up. You will see the 50 closest to your current position and can select one of them as a destination.

understanding

I have loaded different poi in my unit c330.
say Im going from point A to B and the differnt poi will just come on as Im moving, for example flying J and the red light ect ect?
Jim

If your unit works like the

If your unit works like the nuvi, then for those "general" POIs, such as Flying J, they will only come into to play as stated above. You use them as "Where Tos" in route planning. The Redlight Camera POI on the other hand has an alert status that should give an audible and/or visible alert when you come within the set distance from a redlight.

One more point. If you are

One more point. If you are zoomed in close enough while driving, you should see the poi on the map screen. I think you have to be zoomed in quite close though.

Unit C330 will not show custom POIs while you are passing by. You will have to save them in your Favorites, only then you will see them on map.

confused..

I have custom POI's on my nuvi, and the redlight cameras. Are you saying that while driving a route or just viewing the map i should see my POI's? I know the cameras should alert me.

I think the only one i've seen is Home as an icon on the map

It sounds like you aren't

It sounds like you aren't zoomed in far enough.

As stated earlier, you must be zoomed in to at least the 300ft level. For example on my c550 all the way zoomed in (+) is 80ft, zoom out (-)120ft, 200ft, 300ft, 500ft and so on out to 500m.
Zoom all the way in, then back out (-) three times = 300ft, the fourth time, they're gone (500ft)

I can see the custom poi bmp's I have from 80ft - 300ft at 500ft and out they are not seen.

Custom Poi icons or bmp's can be seen while driving, or in browse map mode or simulated drive of a route. Again, within the 80ft - 300ft zoom level.

The icons associated with the pre-installed poi's can be seen only in the browse map mode, you also need to be zoomed in to at least the 300ft level. You will not be able to see them while driving.
If you search for a place, ie a hotel and select it, you will see the symbol on the map, however if you "GO" to it you won't see it while driving (or simulated drive) or upon your arrival regardless of the zoom level.

If you select a symbol for your "HOME" (favorites -> HOME -> Edit -> change map symbol) location you will probably be able to see that zoomed out to the 1.2m level

That's how it works on the c550, I'm sure it's the same on the other units as well.

Map Detail

I believe you also need to be set for highest map detail.

Map detail seems to have no effect.

Symbols/icons/bmp's show up as described in all modes of map detail. I keep mine set to normal, but tried it in least detail. Works the same, 300ft and closer. They go away 500ft and above.

Also, if the custom poi with custom bmp is selected
ie custom poi's -> (select your poi) -> map
you will see your custom bmp and zoom out to 500m and the bmp is still visible... in normal or least map detail.

That clears it up

Thanks Lsmonop...That clears it up.

But then again....

I have a starbucks poi, w/the starbucks bmp.

That particular one has given me display anomalies. Sometimes it will display as I've described above. Sometimes it will only display if I've "gone" to it. Another time, I went to a starbucks and couldn't get the bmp to display no matter what I tried. Later in the day, I was in the area of another starbucks and the bmp displayed by just driving by the location. (map detail to normal) I noticed today, I just get the gray dot.

I don't think it's really anything to do with the poi file or bmp. However, as we have all experienced at one point or another, sometimes the firmware updates will play havoc with us. I remember a few updates ago, there was the problem where no bmp's would display, and all we got was the gray dot.
I haven't specifically checked bmp's displaying or not after each update.

So, it is sometimes difficult to say with any certainty, what will display with what unit and with what update.

However, sitting at the computer and using "browse map" or simulate a drive, the bmp's display as I've stated above, with v5.60
