Internal memory

I have a Garmin 255WT, when the unit's internal memory becomes full, will it start automatically putting data on my 2 GB Micro SD card?

Internal Memory

No, if it is like my 750, it will not automatically use the expansion card if the internal memory becomes full. You can install POIs and maps to the expansion card but it will not shift stuff to the card.

Your 255 doesn't have a mp3 player so your chances of filling up the internal memory are small unless you upgrade your map and keep the old one. Garmin doesn't list how much memory is in the 255 series but it should be around 2 GBit.

Internal memory

Jackj180,

Memory is mostly measured in bytes (GB gigabytes. MB megabytes). Transmission speed is mostly measured in bits (Mb megabits, Kb kilobits).

I think you can find out how

I think you can find out how much room is left on your unit by hooking it up to your pc.

Exactly As You Described

Yup, that's exactly how you do it. Connect to your PC with a USB cable, and wait a minute or so for the PC to "see" the GPS. Then open My Computer. You will see the main GPS unit has been assigned a drive letter. Total size and Free space will be displayed to the right.

If you have an SD card installed, it will be assigned its own drive letter and its total and free space will be displayed.

I understand about hooking

I understand about hooking it to the computer and all of that, I just wasn't sure as to whether when and if the internal memory becomes full it will automatically overflow from internal memory into the memory card. Apparently it doesn't.
Thanks!

You are correct it will

You are correct it will not.You have to load files to the sd card just like you do to the unit.I see you have a 255.You will be able to load many files to the unit without using a sd card.Plus there are ways to free up space on the unit if you ever need to that is covered in Garmin support.

Then you are talking about memory swapping, this allows better use of memory by swapping out parts of memory that is not in use. Most likely not used in GPS's as it takes more advance Operating System to manage this task.
