Replacing battery in NUVI - step by step

Battery Replacement

Thanks for that. Looks like an easy replacement.

Yes, it's very easy. The hardest part will be prying the case halves apart. Once you've done the procedure a few times, it can be easily done in about 5 minutes.

Battery Replacement 855

Just a note for those that don't already know.
For the 855 it's even easier, just slide off battery cover, replace battery, replace cover.

It seems timely for me.
Just last week I watched a video someone mentioned and posted a link to on POI Factory and suddenly this past weekend I noticed a low battery- unusual for my 660.

I am sure that a lot of the 660's and similar units were bought about the same time and the batteries will be going around the same time too.

Thanks...

Thanks, GadgetMan, for this link. I've done this with iPods using batteries and opening-devices sold by milliamp.com. It works well and is definitely the way to go, much less expensive than sending the iPod back to Apple for battery replacement. This should work well on the Nuvi too. Shame on these companies for making their rechargeable batteries harder to service than necessary. They should be as easily swappable and replaceable as a cell phone battery.

Yes, I agree. But it took a ruling by the FCC (after all the complaints) to force manufacturers to change the cordless and cell phones to have user replacable batteries.

The all mighty dollar (in that case pennies) drove the the manufacturers to save money by not having an access door and a battery that was usually soldered to wires. That was 2 less parts - no door and no plug-in connector. Also made the phone a "throw-away" device, as a repair shop would charge more to replace the battery than the phone was worth.

Maybe the FCC will do the same for GPS devices. But if nobody complains, then nothing will be done. Visit: http://www.fcc.gov/contacts.html to voice your displeasure about non-user replacable batteries.
