I have a suction cup mount that isn't staying on a windshield. What are the best suggestions of readers here to keep it on? Should I clean the windshield with Windex or alcohol? Does something else work better? I even saw a post somewhere that suggested a bit of Vaseline to help keep a seal.
Another Vote on Bean Bag
You will be surprise how well they stay put.
skip the windshield and use
skip the windshield and use a dashboard disc.
It's been working fine for me since last summer.
+1 on the beanbag mount...
no more GPSr crashing to the floor; I don't want my 660 to die that way. I got the beanbag and am totally satisfied.

friction mount
My suction cup mounts never worked in warm weather - which is mostly what we have in GA.
The first thing I did was buy friction mounts.
Beanbag for me
I switched to the beanbag mount because I was traveling in California and they have a law against suction cup mounts.
I have not gone back. It does not slip, it does not leave rings on the windshield (this is what thieves look for so they can find your home location and use your garage remote to break in). Also, my suction cup mount would let loose every so often and the unit would crash to the floor and be a distraction while driving.
Go get yourself a beanbag.
Suction Cup Mount
Simply wet the rubber suction cup & mount it to the window. It'll hold fine.

Friction
Does anyone use the friction mount vs the bean bag?
I use the friction
I used the friction mount. There are several types. The one I used was what I call the crows foot.It worked well.Like the Bean Bag you have to clean the bottom once in a while.I changed to portable friction mount http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Garmin+-+Portable+Auto+Friction+... mounts&cp=1&lp=8 .Does not take up a lot of space and the arm slides to flat position for easy storage plus it has the sticky bottom.I got it for 14 dollars during the Black Friday sale.Sure you could find good price on web then what Best Buy wants now.

Suction cup
If it is new, make sure you removed the film on the suction cup. I eventually learned that.

Suction Cup Mount
Ironically, I "cut my teeth" on a Garmin StreetPilot 2730 that came with a bean bag mount. It is my Pharos GPS Phone 600 with Garmin Mobile XT that came with a suction cup windshield mount. I tried the alcohol trick, but it didn't help. More recently I tried Windex and that has helped. The design of this mount isn't conducive to using a bean bag mount. On the other hand, I may just end up selling the Pharos GPS Phone 600 with Garmin Mobile XT since I have more phones and GPSs than I really need right now!
Thanks for all of the relies. I didn't expect this post to generate so much activity!
Just wanted to add that the
Just wanted to add that the only time I've had problems with the Garmin suction mount is during the winter so far. When it was really cold, the mount would almost always fall off my windshield and down to the carfloor after a while which is really annoying while driving.
But now that the weather has warmed up, I haven't had any issues with the mount unsticking from my windshield. I guess I'm going to have to buy a vent or beanbag mount for at least winter use.
Suction Cup
Just my 2 cents worth but I have for years with any suction cup is use a very light coat of cooking oil on the cup and have had excellent results. I even use a nuvi 750 on my motorcyle with the suction cup and it has never come loose. Knock on wood.

Suction Cup Mount
I might be switching back to my trusty bean bag mount.
The suction cup would let loose about twice a year, during seasonal temperature changes. I may try cleaning the windshield and mount tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, back to the bean bag mount!

I've been using a combination of the two. I use a small suction cup to hold the beanbag in place. The beanbag takes the weight off the suction cup so it stays in place far longer. The cup keeps the beanbag from sliding around on the dash.
It takes a bit of cobbling to connect the two but I've been using the rig in all three of my vehicles with great success.
Suction cup mounts
I had very bad experience with the suction cup mount. I use an air-vent mount on my car at home, but back when I took the GPS for use in rental cars when we visited our son in California, I tried the suction cup instead. First problem, its illegal to attach anything to the windshield in California. I never got caught, but I was nervous. But I found that the suction cup would routinely pop off if the car was closed for any period of time. l think the problem was that a small amount of air was being trapped under the suction cup, and when that air heated up in a closed car, it expanded and popped the suction cup off. Very quickly concluded that the suction cup simply wasn't reliable.
Instead, I switched to the bean bag - much better, but still not perfect. A tendency to slide off the dash when accelerating at one of those short Hwy 101 entrances!
I use a sticky suction cup
I use a sticky suction cup mount from arkon.

I got this Dashboard pad from Amazon and applied it on my Subaru Outback dashboard. I followed the instructions on how to clean the surface and then let it set for 24 hours to give the adhesive time to set. I attached a RAM suction cup mount to that pad which holds my Garmin Montana 700 GPS and it has not moved in over a year. Very solid.

I have a non-Garmin Bean Bag Mount and it's perfect. The one I got had a fairly deep hole, so I glued a hockey puck inside (the Canadian Solution).
Bean bag offers more flexibility for positioning the GPS. Doesn't block my view of the road, especially since some states don't allow mounting things on the windshield. I mount mine on the drivers side, right next to the windshield. I've had no problem with it sliding around, in that position.
It also allows you to quickly put the GPS and Bag Mount down on the floor out of sight. That way, if you park the car to get a bite to eat, etc. and doesn't leave the tell tale suction ring on your windshield. That way, it doesn't let a thief know that you have a GPS to steal.
I'm guessing that you might be able to mount a dash cam on one.

Clean the windshield and the mount..
Any good glass cleaner will work for the glass. I use alcohol to clean the suction cup as well weekly. At present I use a Dezl 770 and have found the smaller cheap suction mounts just don't work. I use it in a work truck and it's installed/removed everyday. The over sized garmin suction mounts never fails. Cost about $14 but to me it's worth it. Garmin 7-Inch Suction Cup without Unit Mount. You don't say what unit you use or conditions but obviously if the glass and/or suction cup aren't clean you're going to have problems.

Forehead Oil
Yep, I run the suction cup across my forehead, get oil from my forehead on the suction cup, and that thing sticks to the window, never falls off.
When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

Stuck on the windshield
A few years back, I switched to the beanbag mount. When I attempted to remove the suction cup mount I found that it had "welded" itself to the windshield and needed to be scraped off with a razor blade. As mentioned earlier, the beanbag mount is easily hidden and leaves no evidence of "GPS inside". No regrets with the beanbag mount.
