Unlocked .img files

How to open and transfer to a Garmin GPS some downloaded unlocked map files ?
For Europe I have 13 files 150MB RAR generating each 1.5 GB of data.
I RAR one of them which generates an .img file.
But Mapsource does not recognize it.
I am lost.

Just rename the img file
Just rename the img file matching the one on your gps and replace it.
I think the file is either under "garmin" folder or in the root folder.
.img file and Mapsource
Apparently the OP wants to see the map using Mapsource. Mapsource cannot directly read a .img file no matter what its name is. You can read the steps necessary to achive the goal here:
