Garmin 765T stupid after map update?

I recently updated my 765T from map 2010.10 to 2010.40 and, since then, my unit has been rather stupid in routing. I called Garmin and basically they told ME that I didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about so I leave it to you to correct me where I'm wrong. First of all, the firmware was corrupted in version 3.90 so I backdated it to 3.60 and that solved some glitches. But the basic routing process seems to have been corrupted as well. If, for example, I start out from point A to point B, the 765T calculates THE quickest route. However, if I stop at a point ON THE CALCULATED ROUTE to get some fuel or a snack, the unit will recalculate a NEW route different than the original route. Keep in mind that I have not deviated from the original route in my stop. Before the update, this didn't happen... the unit remained committed to the original route. Try it yourself. Plot a route either by driving it or by GPS simulation. Stop at or relocate to a point along the route and then have the unit re-plot the route to the original destination and I'll bet you that the unit plots a new route.

Also, last weekend, the unit directed us to leave the freeway and divert through a little bump in the road town only to direct us back on the very same freeway that it had us exit from only one mile down the road from the point where we exited.

a lot of issues with this update

there seems to be a lot of issues with the 2010.40 map update. if these complaints have been reported to Garmin, why haven't they been doing anything.

early 765T owner

I bought my 765T pretty much right after they came out, and as a result, suffered through some of the early issues such as wacky touch screens, mp3 alerts messing up mp3 music playback, etc.

now that it has been working rock solid for nearly a year, and for 8-10 long trips, I am not going to update any maps or move beyond firmware 3.60 for anything.

just not worth the headaches to me.

your mileage may vary.

The original firmware was

The original firmware was 3.80 and then I updated to 3.90. This caused glitches like the unit shutting down if I touched the screen or it freezing up when typing a name for a POI I was looking for. I backdated to 3.60 and that solved THOSE problems BUT it STILL routes stupidly now. It used to route me to my grandkids' school via mostly highway. NOW, it routes me through a TUNNEL, down residential streets and over busy railroad tracks to get to the same point. I have a friend who still has his 765T in it's original form and it works correctly. I am considering copying his firmware to my unit to see if that clears it up... but I don't have my hope for that. This routing problem seems to be related to the map updates.

I did try to speak to Garmin about it only to be told that I just don't understand how the new maps just work better because of the new information they contain. They think the re-routing problem isn't a problem so they don't care what we say about it.

Hard reset?

Bulldog77571, I have 2 nuvi's (755T and 855) that I have put 2010.40 on and so far I have not had the problems you identified. It could be that there are specific geographic areas that are problematic. I know there are some identified map errors in St. Louis and in the Miami Port area that were introduced with 2010.40, but otherwise I haven't heard of any widespread or pervasive problems with this version.

If you haven't done it yet, you might try a hard reset. Even though Garmin doesn't require or usually recommend a hard reset after a map update, I have had some unusual routing problems after upgrading maps until I did a hard reset. DorkusNimrod gives the procedure in this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136. After you do the hard reset and restore your favorites, you will need to go through the preferences and set them the way you want them. Make sure you select "Fastest time" for the navigation route preference, and for avoidances, uncheck any that you absolutely don't have to have (I keep them all unchecked).

Hope this helps. Good luck in getting your nuvi to route properly.

Same comment, different topic.

I sent a report into Garmin well over a year ago about an exit by the airport in Miami. Near the airport, SR 112 West has 3 exits close to each other. One exit for US 27, one for NW 36 St, and a direct lane into the terminal. I always get off at US 27 exit, but the Nuvi constantly wants to route me to the 36th St. exit, down to Lejune Rd, then right on LeJune to SE 8 St to make a left and go down a few blocks to get on US 27.

The funny thing is, if you do this route on Mapsource, using the same version of maps, it routes it correctly at the exit for US 27.

I assumed it would be corrected in an update not too far off, but there have been over 4 updates released since then, and still not fixed. Not sure if Navteq is dropping the ball, or if it's Garmin.

I'm due for a map update, but have been putting it off due to these types of issues!

I will not update untill

I will not update untill these these issues have been resolved

765t vs nuvi 360

I can tell you there is something to the routing but I don't think it has anything to do with the maps. I used a 360 on a trip to nashville about a year ago with my 360. Several months ago I set the same destination from the same starting point with my 765t and it took me past the road where I should have turned and had me take the next turn and basically back track.

Issues with Update 2010.4

I have a Zumo 550 and have faced similar issues. Since updating to 2010.4, the gps sent me about 40 miles out of the way traveling up I-95 from North Carolina to Virginia. I had thought that it was a shortcut until it told me to make a U-turn and routed me back onto I-95. Don't know what the trouble is but it needs to be fixed.
