petition (custom maps)

Hello everybody. How many of you are in favor of trying to start a petition for Garmin to try and get the custom maps in a nuvi?
The custom maps look awsome but not too many people have a Oregon Dakota or a Colorado. I think Garmin would listen to the people
Who help pay their bills. We want that option for the nuvi. Reason. It would work great for parts of cities like universities. How about it Miss Poi.
Could you set it up so everyone that's for it can sign and then email Garmin. Maybe this approach has never been used and if they are there is a demand for it maybe they will grant it.
We want custom map capabilities for the nuvis. Please Garmin.

I'm confused. Many Users here have custom maps in use with their nuvi GPS units. I have both Garmin's Topo USA maps and a custom Arizona Topo map

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/1/

from GPSFileDepot on SD cards that I can use with my nuvi. It is necessary to turn off the nuvi's City Navigator to be able to view these other maps on the nuvi display.

Topo Maps

Craig,I'm not familiar with topo maps, but I want to try one. I can't remember seeing City Navigator in my 760's menu.

birds eye maps

Kle262 may be referring to the recently announced birds eye satellite maps announced for the Colorado and Oregon series Garmins: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=70144.

Custom Maps

I'd be in favor of anything that let's us use other maps on the3 nuvi series... including TOPO and Bluechart.

That would be great !

City Nav

City Navigator is the map the US nuvis come with. Touch Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo and you should see your version of City Navigator, probably as the only map on your unit.

Ah

Ah, you may be right. That'd be neat.

That's above my grade level, but GPS File Depot offers some tutorials showing how it's done:

gpsfiledepot

Took a look at GPS File Depot. They have clear screenshots of different Garmins on how to select your map and turn off City Navigator.

They have a lot of info there worth looking into.

Garmin custom maps via Google Earth

I thought the OP was refering to the custom map creating process described here:

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/onthetrail...

Those are neat since you can use your own paper map as an overlay.

Otherwise one can build their own custom maps as describe here:

http://home.roadrunner.com/~creek/garmin.htm
The process is very tedious but will work for many Garmin GPSr units.

The gpsfiledepot topo maps are nice, ready made and I have loaded them onto Garmin Etrex Legend, Venture HC, and 255W via Mapsource.

Why Not!

Hey guys.
Talked to Garmin yesterday and they said if enough people will want the custom map it might happen. Let's get something started.

Your barking up the wrong tree!

Using Android Based GPS.The above post and my sig reflects my own opinions, expressed for the purpose of informing or inspiring, not commanding. Naturally, you are free to reject or embrace whatever you read.

Bluecharts and Topo maps

Bluecharts and Topo maps work fine on NUVIs. In fact, the new 550 lets you switch between them based on activity. If you pick boating, the Bluechart shows up, hiking, the TOPO maps shows up and scooting or driving, the road map appears. You do need to purchased an unlock code for each region of each map you want to use (for Bluechart and some TOPO maps) But so far, it all works.

I'm pretty sure I can use different maps on my 755T

Has Garmin ever really added

Has Garmin ever really added new options to "legacy" units? I have only seen map and firmware updates?

In the world of Garmin, "legacy" happens quickly!

Maps -> Wife -> Garmin 12XL -> StreetPilot 2610 -> Nuvi 660 (blown speaker) -> Nuvi 3790LMT

Rare, but yes.

It is rare for Garmin to add new features to existing models, but it has happened. One I know of is the Ecoroute function which was added to the 7x5 series as a firmware update (when upgrading from 2.80 to 3.0 as I recall). I have heard of a couple of other examples. I think at one time they added TTS to a certain model via an update. I remember reading about it but don't recall what model it was.

Very unlikely that Garmin will listen

Since they make other devices that handle other maps it's very unlikely they will make the auto nav units handle those maps.
