Redflex Wants to Change Way Speed Camera Tickets are Served
By Richard Keyt, on January 16th, 2010

A man associated with Redflex, the company that operates Phoenix area speed cameras, filed a petition with the Arizona Supreme Court on January 8, 2010, asking the court to change the method used to serve speed camera tickets on people. The goal of the petition is to make service of tickets easier so that the government collects more money.

The company that runs speed cameras on Arizona's highways is behind a petition designed to change the way violators are served with tickets so more of them get paid, The Associated Press has learned.

The petition, filed with the Arizona Supreme Court on Jan. 8, does not mention the company — Scottsdale-based Redflex — or Quarles & Brady, the law firm Redflex paid to write the document. It only mentions John Wintersteen, a retired police chief for Paradise Valley, as the petitioner and is written under his name in the first person.

In response to a telephone call inquiring about the petition, Wintersteen told the AP that he supported changing a rule so violators could be served through first-class mail rather than in person, so he agreed to work with Redflex on the document.

Redflex officials and a spokeswoman for Quarles & Brady did not immediately return phone calls on Friday seeking comment.

Gov. Jan Brewer said Friday she wants to let the state's contract for the cameras expire later this year and have the program go away, unless voters authorize it. Brewer budget director John Arnold said Friday that the governor's position on the program is that "she doesn't like it."

Thank god for the new governor of Arizona. I was never so happy as when Janet Napolitano moved to Washington DC. Not that it's all that safe with her there.

Personally, I don't care for lawyers in public office.

Reflex is looking to pocket

Reflex is looking to pocket more money from the camera tax.

I don't care much for

I don't care much for Governor Brewer but I do like her stance on getting rid of the speed cameras.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Me too. I hope they get rid of it.

Me too, I hope they get rid of it.

I think they are getting petitions signed to do away with them, but I think petitions in AZ are hard. Much more difficult to get done that in CA for example.

Top Highway Patrol guy

The new Highway Patrol guru is another one that is not in favor of these cameras. I think they'll be a thing of the past within a year.

Redflex (non-U.S. based

Redflex (non-U.S. based company)has a vested interest in this matter. Of course they're going to back this proposal.....they get half of the take of all of the fines collected.

Go figure.

We want more of "your" hard earned money in these hard economic times.

Louts

Redflex are louts, as are the government weenies that want to use automated enforcement.

You notice the cops themselves aren't that enthusiastic about the ticket cameras. They can't say anything too overt, but clearly this is replacing the police union's members. They aren't thrilled.
