garmin nuvi 255w poi display

hi, just wondering if the poi's when you edit them for alerts do they just alert when you set a trip or will they alert automatically, planning a trip to a city but when i get there just wanna drive around and see some sites will the nuvi alert me if any of these poi's are near?

If you activate them i.e. turn them on, they will alert you always when you get near them on the road. Depending on the POI, you may want to use a radial alert aka the TourGuide method. That way, if you're within, say a one mile radius of it, it will alert.

by turning them on i assume you mean when i use the poi loader and it has the proximity alert and you choose say 1000 feet that would be turning that poi on? where would or how would i get this tour guide? sorry new to this gps thing thanks

That's part of it using the POI Loader. But, you still have to use the Extras feature to choose what POI's you're alerted to.

As for the TourGuide feature I'll refer you to Gary Hayman's site! He's a member here...

After custom pois and alerts

After custom pois and alerts are loaded to gpc, go to Tools>Settings>Proximity Points to make sure Alerts and Tourguides are Enabled. When you select Alerts, make sure Custom POIs are checked. Also, you can select Audio to select single or continuous notification. For TourGuides, you have the option of AutoPlay, Prompted, and Off.

I have an 855, but I think the 255 has the same Proximity Points options.
