Any GPS that warns when exceeding the speed limit?

Is there a GPS (Garmin or other brand) on the market that shows the speed limit as well as your current speed AND warns you if you are exceeding the speed limit?

Speed warning

If the user could program a point to give the warning that you are over the speed limit it would be a great feature. I would not want a warning that I went over the speed limit by 2 MPH. I would like to be able to program it to give me a warning if I got more than 10 MPH over the limit though.

I don't think that feature

I don't think that feature is available yet. Perhaps in the future it will.

Timely question. I've just

Timely question. I've just posted in another thread that this was available on a TomTom 330 I tested in Canada. Gave the speed limit and an audible warning at a user definable amount over the speed limit. The warning sound was also user definable. I had the choice of a police siren, but there are enough of those going on without me going too fast. Think I finished up with a cow mooing, for being a silly moo! wink

Garmin 1490t

The 1490t I do know, shows the speed limit, and the speed of travel. If you drive above the GPS perceived speed limit for the road you are on, the speed indicated will turn red, but no sound will be emitted, nor can it be programmed to do so. Yea, it would be a nice feature if a person would be able to input a sound warning at or above the speed limit.

Concur

A warning via the device for going above a set MPH over the speed limit would be a desirable feature.

.

Agreed...but this should be a user configurable setting allowing you to also enter an mph value at which the user will be notified. The warning should not a fixed setting that you cannot disable (something Garmin loves to do to users). Having the unit beep or bong every single time you exceed the limit would likely be very annoying to many users who don't want to use it.

crazy thought?

I wonder if it would be possible to create a TourGuide alert POI and put in an astronomical number of feet, and give a speed alert of 70 or something? Anyone know if there is a limit on the distance away from a POI a sound would be alerted? In short, compine a TourGuide with a speed alert.

speed limit alert

Gary Hayman has an article on this at his site: http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.07.htm#.... The method is pretty kludgy, but probably the closest you can get with current Garmins.

Magellan 4350 & 4370 does exactly what you're looking for. Warning can be set as percent over the speed limit and it can be set differently for rural roads and freeways. The only problem is that it doesn't show as many speed limits as my Garmin 1250 (usually just freeways and a few major roads)

It would be great to have

It would be great to have something that warns of excessive speed.....but it would always be beeping....LOL!

OVER SPEED LIMIT WARNING

Why don't you get a Radar Detecter. That might help.

Yes, it is a nice feature

Yes, it is a nice feature but I wouldn't totally count on it. Here in Ca, DOT conducting the speed limit, mostly in rural areas, once in every 2 or 3 years (I have to check). As a result, speed limit may be changed. If Garmin/you don't update frequently, then it would be wrong. I rather base on signs posted along the road.

speed warning

i have a michelin unit which warns me of speeding. i can program speed limits to which type of road i am on. it will also change speed when in town limits. but it only has 1 set limit for the entire town. most towns have different speeds depending on which type of road you are on.

MIO 310 does this

I tried a MIO 310 a while back and it had an audible warning you could set to warn when it went over your set limit. On I-40 i would set it for 75 and by gosh if it didn't bing bong every time I went over that. I liked it as it kept me from straying over my normal 4 miles over the speed limit. Another feature I loved was the ability to track your trip in segments. It had one screen for the whole trip and another for the day which could be reset each day with out losing the accumulated trip. Unfortunitly the screen was not bright enough for me and there was not enough POIs.

Back to the future...

Indeed, this would be a useful feature. in the mid-1970's I had an 1973 Olds 98 with a mechanical needle like that of an alarm clock. I could set it on any speed. So on long stretches of highway if I didn't want to use the cruise control I could still wander a bit on speed. If the buzzer went off, I would back off on the gas.

I was just telling my son about that very option that existed back in the dark ages! The look he gave me was " right Dad...go take your meds!"

I've eMailed him a copy of this with the recipe for "Humble Pie"

warns of speeding

Two products do this which you can search for.
asafedrive.com for the iPhone and BackSeatDriver for the Android phone.

This would be a wonderful feature! Especially where I live in Phoenix, AZ where there are many many cameras!

Speed limit warning

I would like to see an user configurable setting were you can set a caution (lets say yellow) and warning (how about red). You can set the leeway for each in either percentage or absolute.

That would be a great

That would be a great feature. My nuvi 550 shows current speed and posted speed. If they could just compare the two.

Of course I have found that the posted speed on the gps does not match the posted speed on the road.

If you want a 'speed trap'

If you want a 'speed trap' type of warning, can't you input POIs with the speed in to the Garmin units? I have two set in mine and I just assumed they all did that. Of course, it wouldn't be helpful 'everywhere'. Although, I think a ding every time you exceed the speed limit would be very annoying. If I drove the speed limit when there wasn't heavy traffic on some of these highways around here, I'd get blown right off the highway.

LG

My LG LN740 has that feature (verbal warning) and it's kinda neat.

Speed limit data not comprehensive

epc2 wrote:

This is fairly trivial from a software development perspective. I suspect the real problem is that the Navteq map data does not have comprehensive speed limit data for all streets. Our Canadian friends have been complaining about this for quite some time.

Yes

The GPS softwares on iphone does: Navigon, Magellan, Tomtom.

LG

This feature has been available on LG.

Navigon

units will do it. I bought them for my kids. Took them a while to figure out how to turn off the warning beeps. Navigon has pulled out of the US car market.

I would hate this thing

I get enough grief from my wife to slow down...I would never want my nuvi nagging me too.

ASafeDrive iPhone App.

Please check out www.asafedrive.com

Version 3.0 is coming out which allows users to input speed limits as well as view their speed simultaneously. It was submitted to Apple yesterday for review.

The TOMTOM 930 has had this

The TOMTOM 930 has had this feature for a while. You can use several sound affects to warn you of you exceeding the speed.

A couple manufacturers come to mind

Navigon and TomTom have this feature, and it is very nice to have.

Check out the different models with is slick features.
Navigon models no longer being made but can be purchased at ebay.

Garmin 1390T

The 1390T displays the posted speed limit and your current speed. If you are exceeding the limit, the current speed is displayed in bright red. There is no audible alarm though.

It would be nice -

It would be nice if there was sound with that feature.

Come on Garmin - how about making this part of your software.

TOMTOM 720 has this

My Tomtom 720 shows the posted speed and the current speed. It also has audible warning when exceeding the speed. This was a firmware upgrade a few releases ago.

miomap also comes with a

miomap also comes with a speed alert feature and the ability to use a speed camera database

it would be nice to have

it would be nice to have

thats would be a nice

thats would be a nice feature to have but you could still get in trouble for the " driving too fast under the conditions'

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.

Pioneer AVIC Does

My after market Pioneer AVIC-X has this feature. I can set it to be a percentage over the speed limit. I set mine at 110% so in a 50mph zone it will nag at 55.

The good news is it nags once when you go above the set warning, then not nag you again unless you slow down under the warning level and then exceed the limit again, so it's not constantly nagging you.

The problem is it does not have speed limit info for all the roads.

Interesting feature as long

Interesting feature as long as it was turn-off-able to avoid nuisance issues if they got the limit wrong, etc.

Yes, you can easily enable

Yes, you can easily enable or disable it. And the %warning level is adjustable.

Over the Speed Limit Alert

Didn't some of the old Navigon units have a user adjustable speed limit alert ?

Miss POI

As stated in my prior post,

As stated in my prior post, the LG model I own has this feature and is quite accurate at that too. The moment you are over the limit you get a verbal message. Not certain about everyone else, but here in Quebec everyone drives over the speed limit so keeping it on can be a annoying at times. smile

Although I do find myself driving the posted speed limit when it is on. So yes, it does help.

My 6 1/2 year old Garmin can do that

I have a Garmin iQue I bought in 2003 and with a small freeware app for it, can alert you when you go over the speed limit. It doesn't adjust automatically when you get into different speed zones, but it is very easy to manually adjust.
