Saving to SD Card

Ok I only want to be able to simply save any favorites I find while driving across the US to my SD Card.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 760.

How do I do this? thanks!

Dave

you don't

Favorites are saved in the units internal workspace which is why there is a limit to the number of entries.

I would not call this

I would not call this simple, but you can send favorites to Mapsource for example (EPE also). Favorites can be modified if needed, saved as gpx file, and run poi loader which will load to gps or sd card as custom pois.

A copy of Favorites are saved in current.gpx file on gps. You can open this gpx file in Mapsource or send to Mapsource from gps. EPE editor can also be used modify gpx file.

If interested and want more detail, let us know or use search.

I Agree With jthawkin

This also allows you to open in satellite mode in EPE or GeePex and drag the marker precisely to the location.

Here is what I do that may help. When traveling and I want to save a location.I go to where to,points of interest, try to find the correct icon or category for the location that I have stopped at.Once located and after touching it I touch the all tab. They will show the ones closest to me.After getting the correct one I save as a favorite.Doing this way you will get all the information including address and phone number. If unable to find I use the where am I tab and save the location or touch the vehicle on map screen.Once I save it.The screen that comes up for name.I put the name in plus the city and state(helps me later). You can not input the address. You can go back and edit and change a few things but not add the address. With the name, city and state I can go back and load the favorite to Extra Poi Editor or Mapsource and input the missing data obtained from web, google etc search later.

Folks thanks for all the

Folks thanks for all the helpful replies but I was hoping I could simply save any places I found immediately to the card as I move along in real time like I was doing to the internal memory.

For me that will be ideal but I will look into your other options.

I also heard that I can delete some of the languages, songs, etc. to free up internal memory. That way I can continue doing it the way I was doing it since this way works best for me.

Problem is, I don't know what exactly I am deleting and also assuming that I have to connect the gps to my pc in order to accomplish this?

Thanks
Dave

DrDave

Yes you can delete the voice files that you dont use, Connect the usb to your unit. navigate to that unit and find the voice files, Delete the ones that you dont want and in that nuvi folder you can find the mp3 file and you can delete them also, DO NOT delete the ones with the .IMG are your mappign files and if you delete them you will really have a mess on your hands, Be sure tho just as a precaution back you all the nuvi files BEFORE you start deleting, The voice files I dont normally worry about backing up cause you can download them from the webdater if you later want them back or have a need for them.

OOOPPSSS! I still get error!

OOOPPSSS! I still get error! Memory full after rebooting and trying to save an address.

Also getting prompts to save what's on the card to internal memory. Can I stop that prompt?

I do not want to save what's on the card to internal memory. Memory full anyway thinking it might replace if I say yes.

dave

Just how many addresses do you have

How many addresses do you have stored in your favorites? Favorites does have a limit of 500.

I assumed 500 because it kept on saying memory full and why I bought a card. But since I deleted lots of the other files I thought that gave me back some space.

No to internal memory

See (link no longer available) this is how it works for 265. 760 should be similar.

What you have for favorites is it.Why don't you just make some custom pois out of all the favorites you have and set up custom pois on the sd card? That way you could set up some categories if you use subfolders.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

.

What I did was to import my Faves into EPE, and then save them as a .GPX on my card. This serves two purposes: you can do a hard reset and not risk losing your faves, and you can use it as a custom POI. You can still save them as a Fave on the unit to boot.

Ok interesting. Is there a

Ok interesting. Is there a page I can read up on to learn how to do those things?

All I know to do is from my actual GPS and when I came to this site last night to download some favourites. Not much gps/pc experience.

Thanks
Dave

One of the best tools is

One of the best tools is Extra Poi Editor. You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor . When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download. Once installation is completed you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read select metric and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to load to EPE.You have several options in how to save the completed file.Be sure to read the help file that comes with the download.

Ok I see where I can start

Thanks again. Will do. To both the answers above and below.
Dave

.

You can find EPE here: http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor#toc5

-Open it and under File, import your Favorites
-Then, do a Save As to your POI folder on the card. Create a 'Faves' folder first
-Use the POI loader to transfer the files to the card.

The new Faves are now on the card and can be used from the 'Extras' icon in the Where To folder.

Bingo! That's it. To save it to the unit's Favorites, open the POI and then choose Save.

Edit - As a side benefit, you can delete all the Faves you want, and they're still on the card to use again!

Why delete internal memory???

Unless you were really; Really good at what you were doing, why would you want to delete any internal memory items???
If you were really; Really good, then you would not need our frail help.
I would suggest not tampeing with the internal memory, just in case you brick the unit and have to explain to Garmin how smart you really; Really are.

When I installed the extra

I get error "C:|Windows\system32\expsrv.dll An access violation ocurred when copying the file" while installing the Extra_POI_Editor_Installer. I did need to install it because the Extra_POI_Editor was complaining about the OCX file.

I even tried the different compatibility modes in Vista but still get the same error.

I am on Vista 64bit

Right-click the file and choose 'Run As', enter your Admin name and PW. That should work. Or, turn off UAC.

Have you tried choosing "ignore" the errors as I mentioned in my previous post?

If you do, EPE may go ahead and work in spite of the errors like it does on my Vista computer.

Yes I just did. Actually

Yes I just did. Actually prior to that I canceled the install once OCX was copied into the right directory but that only gave errors though the program ran and loaded the files.

I still however get the same errors after trying your suggestion "Internet Explorer Script error" "Run Time Error" "Automation Error" The Requested Resource is in use. If I try to open/edit a GPX or CSV file. They do load however.

BTW at this time I am only opening files save on my computer and not the GPS.

Are you running any other security software that may prevent the install? Some firewalls silently prevent program installs. Comodo is bad for this. If not, try to do the install in safe mode.

Yup just tried in Safe Mode but exact same issues.

I never turn off ZA or any Spyware antivirus etc. normally but I take it this is very old software? At least so it seems from the UI

.

EPE isn't old really, and was compiled by one of the folks on here, Turboccc. While the GUI may not be as fancy as new SW, it's the coding that makes it work anyway!

EPE, VisualBasic 6 and Vista 64bit

I think EPE uses VB6 so you may want to read the following:

RE: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx

"64-Bit Windows
Visual Basic 6.0 runtime files are 32-bit. These files ship in 64-bit Windows Operating Systems referenced in the table below. 32-bit VB6 applications and components are supported in the WOW emulation environment only. 32-bit components must also be hosted in 32-bit application processes.

The Visual Basic 6.0 IDE has never been offered in a native 64-bit version, nor has the 32-bit IDE been supported on 64-bit Windows. VB6 development on 64-bit Windows is not and will not be supported."

Strike that last question...

.

.

I would first off, name the card Garmin. Then, create a folder in My Documents (or wherever), called Garmin. Open it and create another folder called POI. Open THAT, and create a folder called Faves.

Open EPE, load your file and then Save As to the Faves folder on your computer.

Now, open the Garmin POI Loader. It will ask you where you want to save the POI file, so point it to your SD card on the unit.

That's it. Just add new folders to your computer POI file and load what you want.

EPE must not be compatible

EPE must not be compatible with my OS still too many errors. I do not get a prompt to save file and even if I do it manually it don't work.

They won't show up on the Garmin when I go to Extras.

.

You may want to quiz Turboccc on this problem. His profile is here: http://www.poi-factory.com/user/105346

An email to him may be just the ticket to resolve this problem!

Sorry I couldn't help further.

Vista 64-bit

I am not that surprised to hear it does not work with Vista 64-bit, but I know peeps made it work under Vista. Maybe a 32-bit emulation mode?

Sorry, but I am not equiped with Vista 64-bit. I'll have to make a search for it on the web and see what I come up with. As stated, I developped those tools using Visual Basic 6. 64-bit OS did not exist when VB6 was created.

I hope I will find a workaround for this.

Thanks Turbo

I am asking in another forum as well just fyi because my main concern at this point is to get my gps saving places while on the road independent of a computer.

Don't get me wrong, I do see where this can still help me so I am very much interested.

I was hoping that this app or something similar could get my gps setup for saving on the road.

Again, still very much interested either way.

Let me know and thanks so very much for the help.
