Traffic problem on Unit

Hi,

I have a 765T with integrated MSN traffic. I drive from Manhattan to upstate New York and the traffic shown on the GPS is completely wrong.

Is it possible to change GPS setting not to re-route me based on traffic if delay < 20 minutes? I don't want the GPS to re-route me for minor traffic because going off-track takes longer.

Will greatly appreciate you help.
Thanks
Kapil

On/Off

The only avoid settings for traffic avoidance are On or Off. I would suggest just turning it off. Then if you see a red condition, you could hit Menu - Detour or just exit and let it recalulate.

I don't yet have

this system on my unit, however, from what I have seen, aren't the roads color coded to distinguish between heavy congestion or moderate to none?

Also, is there a time factor (traffic time guideline)incorporated between each color code?

Yes.

They are color coded according to severity/delay, although I don't know what the delay threshold values are between the colors. However, you can not set the traffic avoid based on severity. It is either on or off. I assume the rerouting occurs when it calculates that the detour route would save you time over enduring the delay by staying on route. In my experience, sometimes the detour can be as bad or worse than the original route.

That is what I thought...

I guess if you see red coming up, you can manualy switch to detour?

I mean, any other color you can likely live with...

Depends.

The colors do not always match the actual conditions. I have seen a red condition where the traffic flow is completely normal with no delay.

inaccuracies vs positive feedback

I have read many unsatisfied FM receiver users and I'd say just about the same amout of users who are satisfied using this system.

I guess it all boils down to location and frequency of information being fed into the GPS to achieve accurate results.

With this being said, I am not sure if I am ready to make the move on an FM cable or MSN at this point. Hard to decide.

.

Garmin's rerouting is based on whether the alternative routes are faster than the constricted ones.

You don't have to 'do' anything - if you set 'avoid traffic' to off and then hit the triangle and tell it to avoid the traffic it will either tell you you have the most efficient route or it will present you with an alternative.

In my home market Navteq traffic works just fine and MSN Direct switched from whatever they were using to Navteq in October - so it all works well with timely reports and such on major arteries except . . .

The maps are off registration - so even if I am driving East down the Trans-Canada highway the navigator thinks I'm on the service road - so if the highway is blocked and I'm headed East, it doesn't bother to tell me.

If I'm headed west and I'm on the service road it thinks I'm on the highway and will try to reroute me around the 'obstruction'.

THAT is frustrating.

Even 30 bucks seems too much

I opted to do nothing when my MSN trial subscription ended even though it was at about the time I could have bought the lifetime service and then got a full refund.

I determined that MSN traffic was worse than nothing with errant warning and odd routings based on flawed or at best incomplete data.

Two more years for 30 bucks...no thanks.

Which is better?

MSN or FM?

msn IS fm

I gather (from the e-mail I just wrote to you on a separate matter) that you are in Montreal. If you saw what I wrote above you will know that in Montreal we have Navteq traffic - for traffic only service - and that MSN is providing the same data over their service.

So the real question is whether you want traffic-only or traffic plus weather reports and maps (on the more recent navigators - the weather maps are almost useless, mind you - plus flight arrival information), US gas prices, US news and such for the next 2 years or whether you just buy a traffic receiver now that provides free information (at least until they go broke for lack of advertising)?

Then there's the cellular variant (Nulink) which is the 'next greatest thing' from Garmin that the 1690 has - While the US version comes with a year ot two of service included, in Canada they charge and in addition there are apparently heavy roaming charges for us Canadians when we go down to the US, according to what someone told me.

If you live in a serviced area that has decent traffic (Montreal does) and if you already have the MSN Direct receiver, spending $1.25 a month ($30 over two years) is pretty darned cheap.
