When is next map update?

As I understand, I receive one free map update within 60 days after I first use my GPS. If I retrieve that map tomorrow and a new version appears in 30 days, then I'm screwed.

Does anyone know when the next map update from Garmin will occur? If it matters, I have a 755T. I checked my map info on the unit, and it says:

CN North America NT 2010.10

CN North America NT 2010.10.3D

Next update

Garmin will release the next update when they are ready. If they follow the quarterly cycle, that update should be around the end of Feb. That's not a guarantee - that's a BIG IF.

2010.30 is the current version released in late Nov.

Thanks, I'll check then.

map update

I would wait until day 59 or so to update your first free map.

Wouldn't wait as long as keithd42 suggests.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't wait until day 59. Several users have reported difficulties with Garmin acknowledging the correct acquisition date. Garmin is good about correcting the issue if you fax them a receipt, but I would want to give myself a little time cushion to get it worked out ... just in case.

Downloading before registering

Can I still download POI files before I officially register my unit? It sounds like I need to go to the Garmin site and download their Webupdater first before I can download any files here.

POI Loader

To install POI files, you need to install the POI Loader program on your computer. You can do this without registering your nuvi.

Registering your unit

The date you register the unit has no bearing on the new map period. The availability period for new maps is counted from the date your unit first locks on the satellites. So go ahead and register the unit, do all the updates and then D/L the maps about a week before the period expires. Registering shows you by when you have to load the map update.

map update offer

What you say is generally true a_user. However, you have to be careful in using this strategy. If when registering you are offered a map update and accept the offer, you will be given a time window to download it. This time window may be less than 60 days. If you let this expire and a new update becomes available within your 60 day elgibility from your satellite acquisition date, you will not be eligible for the update.

My advice is register, go ahead and do the map update, enjoy your nuvi and don't play the waiting game.

The only time I was given a window

The only time I was given a window was on a refurb from Garmin, that was 10 days. But then the last new unit I bought was June. They may have changed policies.

map update

use the current available. the changes to updates will be very few. there is no guarantee that the update say a new subdivision. as with all new tech stuff wait a while something new will come along which will be far more accurate than a map update. i think is is just a money grab catching those who want the newest before anyone ELSE.

I'm hoping they release them

I'm hoping they release them before spring, taking a trip down south in April would be nice to have new maps by then.

Map Update

Once you register your GPS at Garmin.com it tells you exact date when the offer for the free map update expires. You are not required to order the free update and start download immediately. You may wait until the very end of the offer. Once you accept the update and start download, the download link is active for 15 days.

im in the same boat. I have

im in the same boat. I have until the end of the month but i think i am going to just go ahead and download the current update

Just do it

I would just download the current map and rest easy. No sense messing about waiting for the next version which is unlikely to have many local changes anyway.

Not worth the trouble

Two years ago, the maps were released on a yearly basis, so it did make sense to make sure you got the newest free release. Now they are released 4x per year, so it seems like overkill to wait. Of course, if you are traveling in an area that was just updated...smile

thanks!!!

thanks!!!

Just finished

I have just finished downloading and installing my free map update (over 3hours in total). The update is better than the map on my old Nuvi 260 but I don’t think that there will be many differences between this update and the one due in March so I decided not to wait. smile
