List of Text To Speech 3rd party voices?

In order to hear Street names being said, I hear that I must select Text To Speech Voices....

I also hear that most 3rd party voices are not Text To Speech voices... Fortunately, I found this out before purchasing.....

Does 3rd party Text To Speech voices exist, and do they just install via Drag & Drop, or, does it have to over-write an existing Garmin voice?

TTS Voices

About the best thing available now is to use turbocc's TTS voice editor. You will still have the same voices, but you decide what they say. You can drag and drop voices onto/out of your unit. And only need to have the ones you want on the unit. It is difficult to keep an original and a changed voice on the unit at the same time however. Check it out here
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTSVoiceEditor

Check Garmin's Site

Jan,

Garmin offers several custom voices. They're posted here: http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/voices/

Connect your GPS to your computer (via usb) prior to downloading and they'll just download straight to the GPS. They won't replace existing voices.

As mentioned in another post, you can use the TTS voice editor to modify any existing voice. When you're tired of being scolded ("recalculating") just type in your custom alternative ("ok, we'll go your way" or "reconsidering the appropriate route") The only limit is your imagination.

Turbo's voice editing program is available here: http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTSVoiceEditor

Cheers wink

In response to Gadgetjq's post, keep in mind that the Garmin custom voices are NOT TTS.

Thanks for the information!!!

Let me ask a question on it's use...

Copy file from Garmin to computer.... save it as reference file...
edit a 2nd copy of this file.... to change wording...
then copy it back into Garmin....

Right?

Thanks again!

I'm using American English

I'm using American English Jack.... on a 660

Have changed the following as a test...

68 recalculating
to: oops, Lost again, recalculating

79 arriving at
to: You made it!. arriving at

93 Please drive the highlighted route
to: Here we go. Please drive the highlighted route

In all honest, the only one I've heard is 93 as I'm inside... and too lazy to go to car to test further..

I'd love to see the changes you folks have done...

I'm seeing a lot of text that I've never remember hearing before....

Oh Yes... I put a copy of un-changed voice with a "J" in front of it.... Don't do that... I ended up with two American English Jack's in the list, and it never picked correct one...Do you think it would be safe in another directory?

My Wife and Jill

now both say the same thing. Instead of "Recalculating", Jill now says, "Darn it, Larry. Next time listen to me"

Got some good laughs!

While reading this post, I have laughed beyond believe!
The imagination some of you have when it comes to altering "recalculating" is short said: Awesome!

Thanks all for this great laugh and it sure gave me some motivation to play with this as well wink

Personalize it!

Make sure your GPS is talking to you or your relatives. When you have someone in the car, make the GPS say their name and look at their face.

Some of mine

As Jill is VERY phonetic, these aren't spelling mistakes!

- 57 We're good to go!
- 65 I need to be plugged in
- 66 You unplugged me you idiot!
- 68 I'm getting your new route
- 69 I'm working on this
- 70 I've lost satellite reception, your on your own.
- 71 Trying to lock on
- 72 I'm off, silly
- 94 OK! Let's get the hell out of Dawge!
- 95 Follow the Yellow brick road!

Another "recalculating" one

Some very good phrases in this thread LOL.

For "recalculating" with Karen I use "Oh,,Oh, you screwed up again,, hang on a second"

As an Australian she uses the proper term "roundabout", but seeing I'm from the USA I think "that round thingy" would be better. smile

Nuvi 750

Recalculating

For "recalculating" with Karen I use "Sorry mate, I'll try to do better"
I think it is better that she apologize for the wrong route.

I am totally going to sneak

I am totally going to sneak some phrases onto my wife's GPS. This is going to be fun.

"Recalculating. Like your husband, I am always right."

For April's Fool Day, make sure to change her "turn right" for "turn left" and the other way around. Instread of "Recalculating", change it to "What's happening honey? Can't figure out your left from your right?".

LOL! I wish my wife had a GPS...

"Recalculating"

I changed it:
Jill says, "Crap, lost again. Recalculate"

I think I will use this line too!! :-)

Recalculating.....

I changed to 'You doofus! You missed the turn" and 'lost satellite reception' to "I'm blind! I'm blind!'

The one that always gets my son is when Jill says "Turn on road' with no name given. Usually happens @ State Parks or the like. Once in Florida I was in the dark and driving and I said "WHAT ROAD?!! Jill, Jill don't leave me -- I don't know where to turn!! Help!!!" and my son laughed so hard he nearly peed his pants!

LOL!

Good one!

create your own voice

Anyone tried "Create your own voice" tool on garmin website?

thanks.

Not TTS

I don't think this utility has generated much interest since it is only for non TTS voices. Most people (self included) want a voice that can announce street names.

When you guys changed the text, do you save overide the old one or save in other files?

Last night I opened: English_Australia_Karen.vpm and made some changes then I didn't want to save overide it, I saved in new file: English_Australia_Rachel.vpm. However, I didn't see that name when chosing option in garmin.

Save the original file on your computer first as a backup (copy and paste). Edit it, and save a copy in a 'modified' voice folder, and then copy and paste back to the nuvi to overwrite it.

Keep the name the same, or it won't show up.

Recalculating

I prefer - OK, your way, master!

Recalculating...

Jill admonishes me with "Try to pay attention next time."

Am downloading VoiceStudio as I type.

Will report back soon - if my wife doesn't kill me after I hacked her 750 with my voice. grin

I changed "recalculating" to

I changed "recalculating" to You are going the wrong way. A line from Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

For the "Drive to

For the "Drive to Highlighted Route", I have Karen saying "Do what I tell you to and we will get along just fine".

Then when she has to recalculate, she says "if you did it right the first time, I would not have to recalculate".

What drove my wife nuts was every time she was supposed to say "turn right", I had her saying "make three lefts, or better yet just go right".

I guess my wife doesn't have the same sense of humor as I do.
