topo maps and navigation maps

how do i use both the preloaded north america nt city navigation map and topo map at same time such as over lapping so i don't have to go to settings each time and change them back and forth each time. please help me out. thanks.

I installed a topo of Colorado as a test on mine last year and found that I could activate one or the other, but when using the topo map the trip routing wasn't satisfactory as all the stuff that makes it work isn't built into the topos.
The nüvi line wasn't exactly designed for hand-held use, but it can be used that way and the ability to switch to a topo map makes sense if you want to take it for a hike in the woods or pack it with you for a hunt, but a specific hand held model is a better option.
I found a "transparent" topo map at the GPSFileDepot that would seem to fit your needs as it is an overlay for the North America City Navigator. It is free, but the only drawback currently is that it is limited to a few states around Indiana.
