Rest Stops Closed

We left home in central IL on Tues and tonight we're about 50 Miles N of Jackson, MS. We found several rest stops along I-55 closed in Missouri and Mississippi. Not good.

That could mess you your trip.

Is there a list of closed Rest Stops somewhere on this site?

rest stop

file should be updated to only include open ones. If you find them permanently closed then you can notify file creator to update it.

Good idea.

This would have come in handy twice today between Albuquerque and Dallas.

There is nothing like having

There is nothing like having to pee like a racehorse and then the rest stop you have been counting on for miles is closed. sad

Seasonal vs Permanent Closures

My only experience with interstate rest areas has been in the western states. Individual state DoT web sites are usually pretty good at temporary or seasonal closures. But permanent closures appear to be a different issue. It looks like Montana and Utah simply remove closed rest areas from their lists rather than identify sites as CLOSED.

It's hard to identify sites that are NOT listed. It's even a bigger problem if you only drive through an area a couple of times per year. I guess we will have to rely on submissions from locals.

Assistance is needed

Even tho I scan individual state DOT websites occasionally, it is impossible to delete all permanently closed Rest Areas from the "Rest Areas Combined" file as the sites only list Open sites and (sometimes) temporarily closed sites.
If you are aware of permanently closed rest areas, either by actual viewing or an article in a local publication, please notify me at my contact e-mail.

Obviously I will need the location ie: State, Hwy #, Direction of Travel, a nearby city or Highway Mile Marker. If you can give me coordinates that, obviously is the best info. Also, let me know if the sign indicates it's permanently or temporarily closed.

I attempt to update the file around the 20th of each month.
I appreciate any inputs. I try to answer any e-mails withing 24 hours but I do travel a bit so 2-3 days delay may be possible. (or even 10 days at the end of this Jan when I will be on a cruise)

ResT Stops

It's difficult to determine whether the rest stops are closed permanently or temporarily. The sign says "Rest Stop Closed". On I-55 thru Arkansas to Memphis and on down into Mississippi the signs only indicated they were closed. No telling, for how long.

Closed rest stops

I have been driving between VA & WV via MD & PA frequently for years. I don't ever remember seeing the WV rest stop entering from MD on I-68 or the MD rest stop entering from WV on I-68 closed. The WV rest stop entering from PA on I-79 is closed more often than open.

lots of em closed

I am finding more and more rest stosp closed. One very nice, modern, clean rest stop, that was about 10 miles from my house in NC, all of a sudden barricades at the end of the exit. Closed! What a waste of a coupla nice buildings. Tis good there is plenty of woods along the interstate. Would be good if there was a DOT website page dedicated to listing all the rest stops that are closing. I really like my rest stop POI alerting me. But rest stop ahead false alarms are a bit hard to take when I gotta go!!

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Arizona Closures

Arizona has closed more than a dozen rest stops (budget cuts) but offers an interactive map showing not only which are shuttered but where the nearest open one is. Here's a link: http://www.azdot.gov/index_docs/headlines/budgetroadmap/Rest...

Other states might offer something similar.

Cheers wink

Virginia Rest Areas

Our new Governor says he is going to reopen all of ours. We will see.

Rest Stops Closed

Louisiana has closed all rest stop, except Welcome Centers. These will not reopen, they plowed the ground and returned it to nature.
P.S. Texas is rebuilding most of their rest area, including wireless etc.

Louisiana Status

According to the LA DOT - the open centers/rest areas
are listed at:

http://www8.dotd.louisiana.gov/dotdaz/definition.aspx?termID...

Not quite as dire as indicated above but still not good.

Here is web site of Virginia Dot Rest Stop Open/Close. http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/map-rest-area.asp

Noted: All Welcome Center are open in Virginia.

VA re-openings

The next version (W) of the Rest Areas Combined will be uploaded to POI Factory "about" the 17th of this month and will include the 8 Rest Areas scheduled for re-opening by March 17th. The Master File had already been updated - just waiting to get closer to the actual date which VA DOT has scheduled. In addition the entire CA DOT Rest Area listing has been re-visited and numerous changes made.
The remainder of the VA Rest Areas are scheduled to be reopened by April 17th.
