What makes Proximity Alerts appear on Settings Menu?

Just got Nuvi 765t. Downloaded User Manual PDF from Garmin. Also downloaded POIs from this site which I can see in my Where to? ==> Extras ==> Custom POIs.
Manual says that I should be able to change the proximity alert settings, by touching Tools ==> Settings ==> Proximity Points ==> Proximity alerts. However, Proximity Alerts do not appear in my Settings Menus.
What am I doing wrong?

tools - settings - proximity points - proximity alerts and i can only turn on or turn off my alerts for my custom POIs. If you want to adjust the alert settings such as speed or distance for a POI you downloaded, use manual mode with POI loader and adjust those settings there.

If I recall, the Proximity Point item does not appear on the nuvi Settings menu until you run POI Loader and and actually load in some POI files with proximity alerts.

This is correct. Run pioloader in manual mode and you will verify the file has a proximity option in the gpx file. Then you will see the option in the settings.
